Can anyone tell me how to create a custom avatar? I see that some members have done it. It's probably pretty easy to do, but I can't figure it out.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Wooly_Bugger,

Go to the top right of the page and click on the "My Profile" button on the upper bar. This should take you to a new page. On the left-hand side there is a sidebar. Under "Your Profile" there is an link to "Edit profile picture." Click that.

Next you're given Option 1 or 2. Option 1 is you can insert the URL to a picture of your choice that you wish to use as your avatar. Simply copy and paste the web link into the entry bar. Option 2 is you can upload your own picture that you have saved on your computer. Click on the "browse" button and select the folder path to the image you'd like to upload.

Hit "save changes" at the bottom of the screen and you're done

Hi. I got a question about Option 1. If we choose the URL, is the file stored on PC or is it just linked to the original?

Hi Takeshi,

I have yet to try using just a URL. My guess is that PC will link it to the original site. Sorry I'm not that helpful.

It really boggles my mind when I think of images or anything on the internet. They are not mine, I don't have the copyright, you get the point.

Anyhow, you'd think I could've downloaded the image first, then upload, right? I already tried and it didn't work with this old Chrome browser. It crashes every time.

Now I think the URL is for someone with thier own blog or MySpace account.

Consider the question answered. Thanks.

You can try taking a screen shot of the image and crop out the rest if you're not able to download it? Just an idea

Bumpity bump...

I can do a custom profile pic, that's no problem. But my avatar choices are limited to the library that already exists.

Is uploading a custom avatar a setting admins control?

It's automatic. You'll need a certain number of posts (10, I'm pretty sure) before you can post links or upload images. After you have 10 posts, go to the avatars page again, scroll down to the bottom, and look for an option to upload a custom avatar.

I thought I saw my profile picture initially, followed by its removal after a brief experiment with an avatar; however, as the post limit you cite indicates, it may be that the uploaded profile picture may not display at all beside my posts until I've made 10 posts, and I misremembered. Thank you, as this has clarified a situation that I initially misunderstood.

At the moment it looks like you do have a profile picture in place, but no avatar. Your current profile picture looks like an old photograph of two people.
