If a member has "account suspended" on their page, does that mean they are coming back to the same account, or do they have to register another account?

it means they've broken the rules one time too many, and have to wait out their sentence.... IF they come back, it's to the same account....

Thanks. I was wondering because people come and go, yet they remain the same.

there are many threads in this section that tells about the suspensions. so you dont have to go looking for them suspensions happen in two ways....

1. a person does something wrong and the punishment is being suspended for a span of days or weeks. then the person can log back in like usual. suspensions do not change a persons name to a number or delete that name.

2. a member can pm an administrator and tell them they would like a suspension because they cant trust their self to stay away from the site and they really need a break. they agree on a space of time for the suspension then when their break is over they can log in just like they normally would.

the coming and going yet remain the same. people do take breaks some long term so it does seem like they come and go yet remain the same.

another situation where people come and go yet remain the same is when someone has asked to delete their account then later on decide to come back. they can re register using the same name they had before (because their original account is gone) or make the new account under another name then pm letting the moderators know who they are and get their old name back again.
Thanks for this!

AmandaLouise puts it perfectly. It's a tool to enforce self-care, not necessarily to punish. People get overstimulated by the environment and don't have the coping skills developed yet, so they need a break to calm down and assess their behavior. I've seen very few "permabans" in my three years here, and people are given multiple chances to change behavior. It's a very difficult choice the admins have to make when they suspend or ban someone because they have to look at greater community good, and they know that person will have friends and people they support and get support from, and they're not trying to be mean, just trying to make a decision that keeps the community safe and supportive and also in the long run can be beneficial to that person.

I will also say that an online forum like this isn't the best place for everyone. It can be triggering and overstimulating, and more hurtful to some than helpful. It's not a judgment; it's just a fact that this may or may not be a helpful community for you. Just like group therapy works for some people and not for others. Or some people respond to CBT or DBT or regular talk therapy. Not every form of support and treatment works for everyone.

Now I might be paranoid, but it bothers me that DocJohn thanked (which to me means: approved of) the post that said suspension was always a punishment.
Thanks for this!

I didn't see a post that said it was always a punishment. No one said that. My posy said it was NOT always a punishment.

If there are rules on a website and you break them, there will be consequences such as suspensions. I guess it comes down to whether or not you believe consequences for breaking rules would always be a "punishment", or whether these consequences are necessary for the smooth running of a forum website.

I think DocJohn "thanked" that post because it very clearly stated that if you break the rules several times, there will be consequences.

i re-read my post very carefully, and never said it was either a punishment or a consequence. both are, however, implied in the word Sentence.... which literally means a period of time (in this context). what a person chooses to do with that time-out is entirely up to them~
