I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question or not.....

Some of us are struggling with triggers related to the sexual abuse allegations that have been in the media lately. I know of two threads on the topic that both got closed. I assume they were closed because they turned into political discussions. I know we aren't suppose to talk about closed threads, but it's pertinent to my question.

I need to be able to post about what's going on with me. Others have said the same. I need to be able to get support from my friends here. I've discussed my reactions via PM with some members, but would like to be able to post to the forums.

So, is there a way that those of us who need to discuss this can do so?

I would think if you post and it is about what's going on with you, rather than what's going on in the media, then it shouldn't get shut down. But if you write a long thread about what's going on in the media, then it will get shut down.

So for example, I could say, I'm getting flashbacks because of what's happening in the press right now. Then I could go on to talk about what happened to me and how the memories keep coming back up and my emotional response is hard to control. And ask for coping techniques on how to handle my emotions...

In the above example, I mention why I'm being triggered, but the thread is about what's going on with me, not what's going on politically.

If people on the thread start to make it political, then the responses should be deleted, not the OP's thread.

I didn't see the threads you mentioned so I don't know how they devolved into political discussion.

Im assuming its like any other topic that may trigger someones child abuse history into things like anxiety depression flashbacks, anger guilt, shame (you know that PTSD stuff many of us survivors have) the posts would go in either survivors of abuse, PTSD or what ever the direct problem is...

example if hearing about the sexual abuse allegations on the news is triggering me to have anxiety / panic attacks I would post in the anxiety board https://forums.psychcentral.com/anxiety-panic-phobias/

or if watching all the allegations happening in the news was triggering me to having flashbacks, nightmares I would post in the PTSD forum here.. https://forums.psychcentral.com/post-traumatic-stress/

see what I mean leaving out the political side of things and look at what the problem you are having is then like you have normally posted about these problems in the past post in the forums that fit the problem you are having...

another suggestion is read your past posts to see where in the past you have posted about what ever problem is happening, example if all the media is causing you to have flashbacks look in your past posts to see where you have posted about flashbacks before....

In both threads, some followed your example, seesaw. Still other members started to make it political. Both threads were locked.

I am lost on this one, too. How do we seek support? Why aren't the political posts deleted from the thread and the thread kept open for mutual support?

There must be a way for those of us in this situation to seek support here without someone's political talk disqualifying the thread?

I totally support Lizardlady's concerns.

Humbly seeking direction,
WC

I don't know, maybe just reminding people when you start the thread not to make it about their politics or beliefs, but about your recovery?

There seems to be a lot of confrontation today on the forums, maybe because of the holidays...maybe that's making it hard for admin to review the threads and easier to just shut the whole thing down?

Another great idea, seesaw, thank you!

The thing is: When some members started going off track, the intention of the thread was clarified in a very clear post. What more can we do than that?

As survivors, we may feel the locking of the thread is similar to the original reactions we'd endured when we'd suffered assault; we were allowed no place to seek support. Thus, the inability to have a mutually supportive thread here on this topic is additionally triggering.

We want to kindly ask how/where we can have a thread for this purpose?

I understand. I don't know a foolproof solution. I wish I did. I know exactly what it is to have your abuse denied...even have your abusers celebrated.

When they shut down the threads, I'm sure it felt like the abusers won again.

I've pruned and re-opened the thread so that folks have a place to have this discussion, along with a strong reminder to keep the thread on topic...
