Another poster has just told me I can’t say I have ptsd because it’s a diagnosis from a doctor and without that I can’t claim I have it.

I am a survivor of child abuse, rape and domestic violence and have been told I have ptsd by a psychologist and therapists but because I live in the U.K. it has not made sense to pursue a diagnosis from a doctor.

I am extremely upset that another poster is telling me “you can’t say you have ptsd you can only say you have stress”.

Is this really allowed? To question how someone else defines their mental health because you believe doctors opinions are all that counts?

They have now changed the thread so it’s only if you have a dx. So I’m obviously not welcome to post. Even though I have ptsd. How supportive.

Actually please just delete my account. Between the thread about how selfish it is to be suicidal and being told I am not allowed to say I have ptsd I just don’t think this forum is helping me very much. Thanks.

I'm so sorry you have had these disturbing experiences here on PC. I've written before, & I'll write it again here, everyone here... well almost everyone... is in so much pain... why add to the hurt? I'm not in any position of authority, here on PC. So this is just my personal opinion. But, from my perspective, the fact that you don't have an official signed diagnosis from a psychiatrist should not... does not... bar you from writing that you have it & posting in that forum. I myself have been kicking around the mental health system where I live for 20 years. Yet I have no official diagnosis from any of the mental health professionals I've seen. Does that mean I don't belong here?

I hope you won't allow this incident to put you off of PC altogether. Each member who leaves takes a little bit of us with them. However, if you do decide you simply prefer to have your account closed, here's a link to the FAQ that will tell you how to accomplish that:

https://forums.psychcentral.com/faq....ni#faq_removal

My best wishes to you...

I agree. In some cases, one does not need a dx. I can relate to your experience as my experience also includes sexual abuse (childhood and during adolescence). And when I was 12, I started having nightmares and flashbacks during the day; when I was 13, I stopped touching or hugging anyone, including my family; and worst of all, I attempted to take my life as I was unable to manage the memories.
Did I need an official dx to know what was going on? No, of course not.
I sought help when I was 24 and I was immediately diagnosed with PTSD. The only reason that I sought professional help was so that I could navigate the healthcare system and recover. I do not need a professional to tell me that I have PTSD.

lilypeppermint, I, too, am sorry you've had these experiences here. Believe me, they are the exception. The moderators do a good job of responding to complaints/concerns about posts, so please report such problems.

Of course, you are free to delete your account, but I hope you will give PC another chance. The powers-that-be haven't had a chance to check into your concerns.

I think people need to be careful about questioning diagnoses. I don't know why someone would be caught up in insisting that you get professionally diagnosed with PTSD, but I assume that was just one person, and one person doesn't speak for the many people here. Just as one person doesn't speak for the suicide issue. Okay?

Lilypeppermint, I PM'd you. Please read my note. And feel free to PM me back. I hope you will stay. The two experiences you have had are definitely NOT the norm.

Please don't leave. The good here far outweighs the bad. I have been a member off and on for a while and I know this is true. Sometimes there are awkward situations but overall this is a safe place. Absolutely...and the moderators make sure it stays safe too.

Please stay. There are few places online like this. So many people here are able to understand where each other is coming from. We have all walked some tough paths and most of us can usually sympathize with one another. The thing we have in common in this place isn't having a diagnosis...it's having had to live with mental and emotional pain. You are welcome here always.

I'm glad you're staying!

Psychiatric diagnoses are subjective and based on self-reported symptoms. So, in a sense, we're all products of self-diagnosis since we're the ones who answer doctors' questions. Thanks to Dr. Google and the DSM, we can self-diagnose pretty accurately, too. Getting a diagnosis from one doctor or the same diagnosis from 20 doctors isn't a big deal, IMO.

You'll get lots of support here!

My doctor told me she doesn’t think it’s important to have a diagnosis so long as I’m getting therapy. I was happy with that!

Diagnoses are labels, after all. They are good for insurance purposes. Treating the symptoms is what really counts.

Glad you're staying. I can understand your anger and am happy you can see PC in perspective now.

Which is why they are less relevant over here as we don’t have the same kind of insurance system.

Thanks all

(((((( lilypeppermint ))))))

I, too, am sorry you were treated unfairly here.
PTSD is a serious matter, not to be taken lightly.

I am glad you have spoken up. It's the only way we can know what you are experiencing. Most of us here at PC do care and want to provide a positive, supportive experience.

May your future experiences here be more supportive.

One problem with forums like this is some come to believe they are experts in the subject or they get an inflated sense of their own importance.

No one here can diagnose or judge you. We are here to support each other only, and we can only speak from our own perspective. Keep posting and don't let the judgemental folks get you down.

I'm sorry you got off to a painful start here.
