I have tried many things but can't get the picture to show in posts.

Also I can't seem to join a social groups called visual arts

Roses it could be that your picture is too large in terms of physical size and or the size of the file that contains it.

there is a social group Visual Artists and you did successfully post to that group.

Try resizing your profile picture both in resolution and in file size. For instance a JPG can be saved as 100% (very big file size and high resolution) down to 10% (small file size and low resolution) or anything in between.
