I'd like see a forum that addresses comorbidity issues. For example, I have Bipolar 1 and recently found out that I have ADHD. My pdoc won't prescribe any stimulants because it could trigger a manic episode. He said that I'm going to have to basically live with it and that it's untreatable.

Comments? Suggestions?
Thanks for this!

There are a lot of people on this forum with comorbidity. I'm one.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Since comorbidity can mean any two or more disorders, I'm not sure what the benefit of having a specific forum for that would be...? We already have lots of forums and we're disinclined to create more when the ones we have aren't being utilized....

I would just post in your primary disorder forum or, if you feel it's warranted, the general mental health forum.

Some time ago we had a Mental illness thread. It’s time, I feel to address this problem again. Although we experienced How to be Sick, not all members could go. Also we might in this thread address other illnesses.

ADHD and Bipolar Disorder: Diagnosis, Treatment, and More

Treatment of ADHD and Comorbid Bipolar Disorder
Treat bipolar symptoms first and if ADHD symptoms persist, titrate ADHD medications carefully
It may be safe to use stimulants if bipolar symptoms respond well to a mood-stabilizing agent
Some evidence suggests that atomoxetine can be used safely and effectively in combination with mood stabilizers
Stimulant use requires ongoing monitoring as it may destabilize the mood disorder
I could post a million links but here are a few. If you think you need stimulant treatment print out or write down this info and point blank as your doc why a first line treatment cant be used for you once the bp is under control.

Hey, @sarahsweets. Thanks for the info and particularly your advice about showing this to my pdoc. My BP is basically under control (the manic side at least) so perhaps we can do some experimenting with dealing with the ADHD.

Yes. Having the BP treated first and being stable is a must. But study after study has proven that you can treat both adhd and bp. I have had the BP under control for 17 years and have been taking adderall xr for 15 years.
