Thank you, Kit! Are you on a computer, or a smart phone, or a flip phone (like I have)?

Is it because of my device, or the receiving device, or both, like the two devices are not compatible?

it seems to be if you use the smilies that are on your phone and not on the forum, thats when they refuse to load

I don't have any smilies or icons on my phone. I only can use the MSF emoji codes provided here.

Thank you, willowtigger, for trying to help me figure this out! One of these days I'm going to get a nice laptop. I've been exploring on the internet about which one to get.

I'm still a rookie with smartphones, and when I use the emojis on there (keyboard), certain ones show up and others just show a square with an x in it. But if I use the ones on MSF on the site itself, they come up.

I sometimes use Tapatalk, which makes posting in the forums more user friendly on a smartphone. So then I can only access the ones on the keyboard. And still only certain ones will show up, so I stick to the basics like smiley and frowney. Other images like hearts or animals don't appear.

I don't know a lot about technology but a tech savvy friend told me it depends on what the recipient has, like not only what kind of device (laptop, tablet.....of which I don't know the difference, smartphone, flip phone, desktop) but what kind of system they use and browser also.

It's too much for my brain. Even different email programs might show something different on the receiver's end or they can't open the attachment or part of it is cut off, etc. I only know just enough to get by in most cases, but it's just too complex for me and changes all the time. (Upgrades)

You made my day. I so rarely get thanks or appreciation from anyone and nobody asks me anything as if I don't know stuff. But sometimes I know stuff.

I even found out a user's settings can make a difference too, like maybe they have it set to display generic emojis only and not the actual image, like the colon, dash, and right parenthesis for a smile. They might see that instead of the actual face, like if they have set not to convert emojis.

Yesterday I tried to take a picture of a letter to send to someone, and on my end it looked okay. I'm not skilled at taking pictures, whether from an old-fashioned camera or a smartphone, especially the latter! I don't have enough practice and nothing to take pictures of.

The recipient said part of it was cut off when she tried to print it. So now I have to go to the library and use their scanner to email it. (I certainly don't have a printer or scanner at home! Not even a computer) I selected "reduce size" when prompted by the phone, but I don't know if that's a good idea or not.

When I type in this box and select an emoji from the site on the right (and you can click more to get more), it appears in code. Like I'll see "confused" spelled out, with a colon before and after it. Then when I submit it the emoji itself appears. It will appear in the "preview" box too.

Glad I could help. Thank you.

Our forums don't support inserting emojis directly from your smartphone's keyboard. They will not display correctly and there is, unfortunately, no easy way to fix this because of the age of the software we're using.

Tapatalk may offer limited support for doing so.

I don't have a smart phone, just a flip2 with a browser. And it doesn't have its own emojis or icons. It doesn't even have a keyboard. Just the numbers & the 3 or 4 letters that go with those numbers. I push the number key the necessary number of times to type the appropriate letter. By now I can do that fairly fast. I was able to find psych central/PC (now MSF) because I got this cell phone. When I saw members using the smilies, I wished I could do that. One day I saw the smiling icon above my posting & I clicked on it & discovered the codes. I got so happy when I saw I could put them in my posts.

On my old Alcatel ("dumb") phone, I could do texts but only in SMS format; it didn't support links for example. And when I got a text and people sent emojis, I'd either get a square or symbols that look like math symbols. It's because it doesn't recognize the emojis or can't convert them. (I still kept my old phone because the reminder feature is more user friendly and I play games on it.)

It DOES have its own emojis, quite a bit too! But they don't show up to the recipient. I even found out that if you have an iphone and send to an Android, they may not display right or at all. (It would be so much easier if everyone in the planet had the same brand phone, LOL) I know what you mean by the multi-tap method. I had that too, but it also has "smart" text where it predicts the word you want.

Emojis are such fun to use and get the message across more than words. But because of all the different types of systems and software, they don't always convert. If I stick to the basic emojis from the smartphone's keyboard, they seem to show up. Tapatalk is more iffy, but if I was posting on it and others were using it too, we'd be able to see the same things I believe. (Like if I'm sending PM's to someone who is also using it to PM me) There's keyboard strokes too, like <3 will convert to a heart......sometimes.

This box has options under it, where you could check the box "disable smiles in text" so even this site has that option.

I'm glad you found a way to use them, Breaking Dawn.....
