Why are mega threads being allowed to close when there is always a lot of activity on them? I know other members start them but it doesn't feel fair to the other members who post all the time on them and are the ones who keep them going.

The game threads you mean?

i think they get closed when they get too big for the forum computer to cope with loading

according to past posts by doc john, when threads reach 100 pages they are closed and a new one is opened. The website servers can not handle longer threads indefinitely.

Think of it like a glass jar, you can only fill it so far before you have to set that jar aside and begin filling another one.

the long threads never end, they just get a new "jar" to post in, so that people can continue filling and enjoying the conversations.

Ive lost count how many new "jars" the couch thread has had, many years worth, that thread has been going on and on. when it gets full and reaches its number of pages limit, the mods start a new one and includes a link in the old threads last post to let everyone know the thread continues on and where to find it.
Thanks for this!

We close threads over 100 pages to conserve server resources and help with database maintenance. These things help keep our servers healthier and a bit happier, keeping us around now for over 20 years. Sorry for the inconvenience, but this has been a long-standing policy here.

No I meant there was one that only had like 400 posts that was suddenly closed yesterday even though it was still active and being posted on and I don't get why. It was a thread about rants. I started a new one but I don't understand why the old one had to be closed.

Well, if it wasn't because of it reaching the post/page limit, then it's likely because the OP requested its closure. Anyone who starts a thread can request us to close it. Since the member who starts a thread is its owner, this is a long-held right we've followed. We don't ask why and don't need a reason to close a thread when such a request is made to us. Especially for a thread like this, where anyone is welcomed to start a new one on the same topic.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
