OJ looked like what I needed (I was going to use it as an open diary for users to read. A 'normal' diary was no good, coz most things in my diary are for church, every Sunday).

Downloaded OK.

Made the directories OK. Figured out that CHMOD was simply right click and change prefs.

Now what?

Found oj.cfg, configured my PC to open this in Notepad, away I go. Follow the installation instructions, hopefully correctly.

The 'sample' directory structures are long winded compared to my actuality. The CGI-BIN is in my main root, so the config file starts like this, with the $mydir string blank.

$mydir = "";
$progdir = "/cgi-bin/oj";
$ojdir = "/oj";
$cgi_url = "/cgi-bin/oj.cgi";
$baseurl = "http://www.chippingcampdenbaptistchurch.org.uk";
$title = "Church Diary and Events";
$mesgdir = "story";
$ext = "htm";
$mesgfile = "index." . $ext;
$multiuser = 0;
$daytoarchive = "5";
$timezone = "GMT";
$colors = qq~ bgcolor="#FFFFEE text="#000000" link="#000077" vlink="#884400" ~;
$background = qq~ background="" ~;
$font = "arial,helvetica";
$size = "-1";
$tcolor = qq~ bgcolor="#CCCCAA" ~;
$tbcolor = qq~ bgcolor="#005544" ~;
$tbfontcolor = "#FFFFFF";
$tbfont = "verdana,ms sans serif";
$linebr = "
";
$target_window = "";
$auth_time = 3600;
$db_use_flock = 1;
$auth_dir = "$progdir/ojauth";
$tplt_dir = "$progdir/ojtemplates";
$auth_pw_file = "$progdir/ojaccess.db";

Is the index file supposed to be the file where the OJ will load? Who knows.

NEway, what do I do NEXT. You say run the OJ.CGI file. How? What software do I need to do this. How do I tell it where to put the message.

Can you tell I'm new to CGI? I can write Java, C++, VB, etc, but this has got me stumped.

And tons of downstream questions. I'm really sorry about this, and that isn't helping my depression, or these **** constant Paroxetine withdrawal shocks in my head. I really think the execs at SKB should be sentenced to live in my head for a few days and then reply to the question, 'So you maintain Paroxetine isn't addictive?'

Apologies for all the English colloquialisms.

I know I'm depressed. You would be 9 days after coming of Paroxetine after taking for 9 months. SKB should die, die, die.

It occurs to me that a directory structure of my site would be handy to see if I haved messed up the basic parameters of the cfg file:

ROOT - Has the HTML files (*.htm) in and 4 sub-directories:
- bin
- cgi-bin
- img
- ojdir (my domain provider does not recommend one or two letter filenames like oj, which i only just found out, their system more often than not denies access and disconnects - so I did change the oj.cfg file to reflect this since my earlier posting)

The properties of the ojdir directory are Read/Write/Execute for everyone.

In the oj directory (which itself is empty of files) is an empty sub-directory called story, the properties of which are Read/Write/Execute for everyone.

In the cgi-bin directory are 3 files: auth.pl, oj.cfg (modified as shown in the earlier posting, but with the end bit unmodified as suggested) and oj.cgi

Also in the cgi-bin directory are 2 sub-directories called ojtemplates and ojauth. ojauth is empty and ojtemplates has 4 files; article, datebar, entry and index. These have no file extensions, which is how they were in the compressed file I downloaded. They do appear to be HTML files though, presumably the template for each message.

The properies of the ojauth directory are Read/Write/Execute for everyone.

ALL other directories (e.g. ojtemplates) are Read/Write/Execute for me (owner) and Read/Execute for Group and Everyone. This is the default on my domain.

I know I'm depressed. You would be 9 days after coming of Paroxetine after taking for 9 months. SKB should die, die, die.

Yipppeeeeeeee

I dun it on me own.

I may be thick AND stupid.

OK, I AM.

The first five settings should have been:

$mydir = "/home/chipping/public_html";
$progdir = "/home/chipping/public_html/cgi-bin";
$ojdir = "/oj-dir";
$cgi_url = "/cgi-bin/oj.cgi";
$baseurl = "http://jaguar.supanetwork.co.uk";

Why?

Coz that's the REAL address to my domain, which is presumably masked through the reistered name, or some such technobabble.

NEWay, hope you didn't read this and spend too much time on it.

Lesson? The Installation instructions are written by someone who knows what they are doing for folks who might not. There must be a lesson in here somewhere. But who cares? Not me.

Bye 4 now

Congrats!!

I was about to say, I don't think $mydir should have been set to "", which you eventually figured out. Yay! Oh My, I Feel Confused (ancient Confucian saying!)

First of all,
<marquee><table bgcolor="black"><tr><td><font color="red">C</font><font color="blue">O</font><font color="white">N</font><font color="green">G</font><font color="yellow">R</font><font color="orange">A</font><font color="white">T</font><font color="red">U</font><font color="blue">L</font><font color="yellow">A</font><font color="green">T</font><font color="orange">I</font><font color="blue">O</font><font color="red">N</font><font color="white">S</font><font color="white">!</font></td></tr></table></marquee>

Now, technobabble is right, LOL! I was being nosey just what OJ was all about so I looked at the instructions he wrote up. I know some html, but I know nothing about cgi! Yikes! Doesn't seem all that bad at first glance, but don't think I'd get very far without knowing more, LOL.

Hey, DocJohn, you're a brilliant man--how bout coming up with an OJ that is non-cgi? LOL! It's at least a nice thought, huh? If it would only work.

Ann

there should be an easier version of OJ or at least an automated installation script of some sort... someday... unless someone wants to volunteer to write it!!
