Reposting this to it's proper location.

Is anyone else having problems with the new server?? I'm getting nothing but problems! First, my password wouldn't work so I got a temporary one. When I go to my profile, it won't accept a personal password nor will it change my email address! NOW I can't get into chat even after I made sure the port was open on my firewall AND downloaded AGAIN the newest version of Java! This is so damned frustrating! Sure hope this is the last server change for quite a while!

ARRRRRGH!!!

I'm not sure what the problem is with the password issue -- none of the software has changed, so there's no reason for you to be having password problems. You may find you have to clear your cookies (there's an option in "My Profile" section to do that) and try again. Alternatively, you can email me your desired passwords and I'll update accordingly.

There's nothing unique about chat that's changed either. We moved the port it uses back to its default (8080) rather than from what it was using on the old server (6667) for security reasons.

A lot of these problems can be traced to Microsoft Internet Explorer, whose default behavior is to cache Web pages for improved Internet performance. That's a great idea, but MSIE's caching engine has been flawed for years (it has numerous bugs in it) and they've done nothing to fix it. That's why people were going to the "old" page with the old port, and not being able to get in.

There's no single solution that's going to work for everyone. Some people can upgrade or change browsers, others cannot.

If you need to stick with MSIE, you can help the caching issue by choosing:

Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings (button)

Change it from the default of "automatically" to the second option (every time you start IE). That may help.

Usually if you get into chat and "get booted out" or find performance problems with loading pages, that's simply a bad Internet connection. This is going to always be an issue if you're on dialup, as I can't control the quality of your dial-up connection. The best thing to do is if you find you keep getting booted out of chat is to hang up on your current dial-up connection and reconnect to your ISP. This usually clears things up.

If you constantly receive slow pages or getting booted out of chat rooms online with your current ISP (AOL, Earthlink, whatever), it may be time to look into getting a new ISP. (For instance, NetZero gives you the same Internet AOL does for less than half the price.)

Trust me, we've done performance numbers on this server and it is anything but slow!

September, do you have a firewall? If so, that could be it. I've had a lot of problems with chat and firewall. If they've made one change to this site, your firewall could be keeping you from getting in.

have to tried shutting it down and then getting into chat? i would and see what happens. If you can get in then, you know you need to deal with the firewall.

gl!

Thanks, Kimmy. I did that. When I was trying to get into chat, the grey area that shows the coffee cup suggested that I check to see if port 6667 was open. I added it to the "exceptions" list on my firewall and it seemed to fix it. Problems with new server

I haven't tried changing the password or my email address yet. Maybe now would be good? LOL

Thanks, Doc. I opened the 6667 and it worked. It's still working even after your change. Problems with new server

I stopped using IE long ago. I'm on Netscape and still had the problem but now it's okay. Seems the new server ironed out it's own wrinkles. Problems with new server
