Does anyone else self-medicate with drugs to help ease the symptoms of c-ptsd?

Not that I'm recommending doing it, I just wonder if I'm alone in only being able to cope and function in the world when self-medicating daily.

With it, I can just get by. Without it, I can't function as human being.

Hi Thing I did a lot of drugs when I was young but alcohol was my favorite , I self medicated with alcohol for most of my life before I found out that's what I was doing , I have since gone on doctors drugs which are more suited for this purpose if you get the right ones for you. I am better than I was but not as good as I would like to be. illegal drugs can land you in jail and their only purpose is to get you hi not to help you and after you take them long enough the superman feeling is gone and people just keep taking them because by then they're addicted

I developed a dependency on alcohol....from a young age, 14, I used alcohol. Then as an adult I used it to self medicate and it developed into a serious problem and dependency. I am now 4 years sober. It was hard, but has been the best thing for me. I found I couldn't begin the journey of healing under a fog of booze fuelled self medication.

I have used food for many years on and off since childhood. Found my way for a while, but since the ptsd got triggered full force about 8 years ago........I use and use food. It disgusts me, and is a major problem. I hope to overcome it.

I shopped to feel better.....that is under control mostly. Apart from my "doing coffee" addiction I suppose.

I used sex at different times in my life......it was demoralising, and I I have so much shame from that.....I need to work through that.

If I read all that back......the simple answer is.....yes I have and currently do self medicate. I think it is a common factor for those with ptsd and cptsd. Sadly

TWF I do hope you get the support you want if you are trying to stop.I know stopping booze especially has been a huge huge benefit to me.

I didn't think it was cold. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'm new to this but feel comfort in knowing I'm not the only one feeling unable to cope without something in my body wether it's alcohol, weed or vicodin. When I'm stone sober I want to crawl into a dark cave and avoid people and responsibility because all the memories from my past hit me and I become numb to everything and everyone around me. I've been working on being sober as much as possible but I have my relapses a couple times a week.

Ya according to my T it's common for people with CPTSD to self medicated. Also seems alcohol is the common choice. I am one of these people, but I didn't know that I had ptsd until recently. Now it's all coming together for me as to why I use it. I've been really thinking about this lately. Good topic OP, I am learning a lot on this site from all of you. I have to go to my gp to get my meds sometime soon. In the mean time I am not using and
avoiding any trigger's that can create the disaster that is created with drinking.
Thanks for this!

Glad you're learning and receiving the support and meds you need.I am slowly learning that meds and drugs don't go so well together. Alcohol and other drugs can greatly effect the metabolism of meds.
