I was just curious.

It gives cautions at the end of the article, and I struggle with 2 of them. It makes me a bit leery to give it a try.

Just curious.

hmm - there's some debate about whether the diving reflex persists in most adult humans - it's an aquatic mammal thing, not a mammal thing

also it parks emotions, it doesn't 'regulate' them (ie it replicates a state where your body has to focus on survival - not sure I want to go there)

It made me think of whales and dolphins. Whales are mammals, I don't know why dolphins. Maybe their intelligence. ?

So when you say it "parks" emotions that means it just numbs you? Numbs/stops the reaction? Numbing is my greatest obstacle right now.

That would make sense. Maybe it shifts your brain into a reptilian state. ?

It would stop the distress, but it sounds like it would park you in a state of numbness.

Not sure I understand the warning about heart issues or eating issues, unless it implies that it sets you down in a reptilian brain state.

Does that make sense?

Interesting conversation going on here, still going "hmmmmmmm" My thought was about "Free divers" who can dramatically hold their breath and slow the heart rate down to reach great depths. I expect the colder water has something to do with that, like the cold water drowning events. Okay I'll stop babbling

Very interesting article. I would be hesitant to try it myself since I sometimes get heart palpitations.

I mean it puts them on hold so you can deal with the perceived threat to your survival

at least that's a possible critique, I'm not convinced that is really regulation

maybe, just maybe, there's a case for needing to do this in cases of panic where all else fails, but I'd be reluctant myself

Yes my understanding is in humans the diving reflex only persists in adults who have trained themselves to dive, otherwise it's more a baby reflex.

The baby reflex....I always wondered how babies can swim under water so easily, without training. It was scary for me to watch, but also amazing.

Hmm I have never tried that myself but when my daughter was inconsolable as a baby and nothing else worked I would step outside with her into the freezing temperature and she would take a sudden intake of breath and stop crying immediately. I would console her for a short time, less than half a minute, then go back inside. Sometimes it was the only thing that worked. I wonder now if that is related to this?
