OMG, I do this all the time. I end up battling hypervigilance and often feel like I have literally run a marathon when I am exposed to certain situations.

My husband has been away for going on a week now. I don't have much food in the house to eat and I have tried to figure out ways to get things to eat without going to the grocery store. This picture is what happens to me when I go into a busy grocery store and I fear that I would not last long enough to get what I need and make it to the check out. No one GETS THAT. Hypervigilance affects me too. It's certainly not a choice. Some grocery stores have online ordering and then you either just go to the store to pick it up or they deliver. Maybe that's something you want to look into until your husband is back.
