What do you do when you are triggered? (when traumatic memories come back to you / when something / someone triggers a memory) Or is that a flashback? How do you cope?

Partly, I know the answer. Do something that grounds me and regulate my emotions.

I think I also want to start learning, bit by bit, because I cannot stomach this full on in my face, but I want to start learning about the effects of the type of trauma I experienced, and how to cope.

I know that what I experienced over and over has changed me and I can't go back and make it different. It has affected my development.

I also know I need to not isolate.

The hardest thing for me is to be aware that I am triggered in the first place. Once I become aware I need to take timeout, talk about it or do yoga or walking. But the part of me which is resentful and wants to "protect" my wounded parts resists doing those things and prefers to be hostile. I have made many mistakes in the past. I am hoping to become stronger and to heal enough to have healthy relationships

Not isolating is important..
For me I also (sorry what I was about to say is just too complicated for me to articulate right now in the exact way I'm intending. Anyway thanks for this question!

It helps me when I can identify what triggers me and when it happened -- in the past and not right now!

I try and talk myself down! A lot of the time I get deep into ruminating on a memory before I realise what I’m doing - which has led to me slamming cleaning bottles etc down at work and just acting generally pissed off for a few minutes lol. I’m sure cleaning helps ground some people, but it gives me a bit too much time to think

I'm grateful that I am not alone. That's all I've got at the moment. This is a work in progress. Thank you.

I sometimes find it difficult to recognise I've been triggered, in that I know I'm feeling 'something' but I don't know what or why. My T says it's because I'm not tuned into my thoughts and feelings or sensations in my body. It's something I'm working on but my go-to response is to dissociate.
