Help. I've struggled w self esteem my whole life. I'm happily married but my jealousy is taking over the marriage. How do you overcome jealousy? And realize the one you are with loves you for who you are.

Well it starts with having a positive core belief about one's self. If this belief is somewhat negative you've some work to do. As for jealousy, perhaps you have very good reasons to feel this way but I believe it is also very much tied to our sense of self-worth; just as you have pointed out.

There are ways to improve one's self-worth and obtain a healthier core belief. Of course, having a great therapist - especially one trained in CBT - helps. There are medications too that will reduce the need to obsess and ruminate (things which only feed into our poor self esteem and jealousy).

Can't find a program or therapist? There are some great self-help books and internet based therapies out there. Personally I would concentrate on those that include worksheets, charts, and other assignments as part of the program.

There are numerous advantages to stripping down and building up a more positive core belief for oneself. I believe that confidence is most important - and this will greatly factor in combatting jealousy - not to mention giving you the strength to act if indeed your suspicions are founded.

(Such work need not take a long time. Programs like those modelled on CBT are designed to be a 12wks in duration. I myself really noticed a change at the midway point - yes, after 6wks I was feeling much better about myself.)

What makes you jealous? Do you suspect something?
