Let's play "name that emotion" ... or rather, emotional/cognitive states that seem to defy description. Challenge accepted!

I believe that it's fairly infrequent to experience one "pure" emotion. Moods have subtlety, they overlap. We can have the sad/happy feeling we call "bittersweet", or the hope/fear sensation of "excited butterflies", for example. I've listed some complicated and not very pleasant states I've sometimes experienced:

"Aching numbness" ... like you're grieving the lack of something in your life but you're not quite sure what it is. I associate it with acute boredom or loneliness.

"The bad mellow" ... my term for emotional system shock when you feel way, way TOO calm after a stressful period and it just doesn't feel right. Could this be when we move from adrenal overload to dumping all the norepinephrine we can produce into our nervous systems? I do associate this with the onset of occasional nightmares -which are apparently correlated with a burst of excessive norepinephrine - so that theory could fit.

"Emotional dyslexia" ... that moment when you have absolutely no idea what you are supposed to be feeling. It may be a state in which you have conflicting emotions or are very worried about multiple things, and can't quite sort out the inner states.

So ... anyone want to have a go at "name that state"?
