I feel terrible guilt and shame for nearly everything I do I constantly feel like a burden or a bother. I tend to breakdown often because I feel so bad for doing something or nothing or not the right thing. I cannot function with any feeling of guilt without an over exaggerated reaction and fear of being a burden. I have been doing therapy for years but nothing I seems to help the overwhelming sense or guilt.

Hi. I just want to say I know how you feel. I obsess about everything and feel guilt for everything too. Do you think you are doing anything to warrant this guilt? Do you think maybe it is all in your head? I think mine is in my head but then convince myself it's beacuse of something i must have done.
You are not alone.

Did you have critical parents as a child?

Welcome to PC!

Guilt serves no purpose when you've learned the lessons of your mistakes. Have you tried talking to a therapist or counselor?
Thanks for this!

Probably, rather than guilt, you are feeling shame. Guilt is a feeling about something specific that you did. Shame is a feeling of "I am wrong/bad."

Shame is an inverse form of aggression. A learned (but a *passive*) reaction to aggression.

Sounds like you need to practice assertiveness and setting boundaries.

Hmm that is possible I'm sure some of my guilt is valid but most of it is probably just irrational because in all honesty I usually am very responsible and follow the rules so I don't have many things to actually feel guilty for, sadly I do. It was nice to hear you're experience

Yes usually they were quite critical of me and in some ways that was helpful but I guess this is one of the negatives

Thank you for the quote it was nice to get your message. And to answer your question yes I actually have been in therapy for years but regarding guilt they haven't given much advice
