How do all of you cope with badness (ex: illness, crime, etc). I recently heard about the ambush of a Mormon family in Mexico and the news has left me devastated. I can't believe things like this happen in our world.

I saw that on the news, too. There’s pure evil in this world.

I try to keep safe and look for the positive. I try to do what I can to be good.

Human beings can be incredibly violent and ruthless. I have been watching a documentary on the Discovery Chanel called "Why we Hate" and there are parts that have been hard to watch, yet, at the same time it's very educational.

Honestly I just have to stay away from the news, if anything is posted on my social media I fling right past if a friend is all wound up about and wants to tell me all about it , I something I typically say , you know what ? I’d love to sit and hear it all but I just can’t handle it right now and ask them about the kids or job etc. ... sometimes I just need to be an ostrich and stick my head in the sand.

I think it's important to remind ourselves that there are good people in the World, too. They just don't make the news because they aren't quite as interesting for most people. But their voice matters, too! Please don't let yourself feel too discouraged by this kind fo new although I DO understand it is hard. Be kind to yourself! Sending many safe, warm hugs to you, @NeedHelp104, your Family, your Friends, that Poor Innocent Mormon Family and ALL of your Loved Ones! Life can be overwhelming! Keep fighting and keep rocking no matter what happens, ok?

I think you are right to acknowledge the sadness and pain in this cold world. Feelings pass though and its good to remember that. So, the sadness you feel won't last forever. Take care, and it doesn't hurt to focus on the good by spreading love.

It's a really good question.

I feel as I get older I am more aware of bad news. I know more people in the demograph who experience increased illness - that is tough, no two ways about it. It's reality.

I guess I cope by doing what I can to support those who need it. Sometimes there are appeals or crowd funding you can donate to.

I try to immerse myself in happy times when I can - I love spending time with friends young children for example, that always makes me feel the world is a happier place.

All in all I'd say we have to grab happiness when we can.

Some good stuff above. I have had to take some similar measures. I have identified what triggers me at this point in my life and so, I do not read or watch or listen to anything that has anything to do with American politics. The reason is that I believe our president is evil. Sorry. I do. And just so we're clear, I am not a Democrat. I'ma a lifelong Republican. But politics makes me very, very angry and sad, So, I just don't do it anymore.

I also tend not to read or listen to or watch stories like the one you mentioned in the starter thread. Same reason. Anything that has to do with Mexican cartels make me angry. Anything to do with bigamy also makes me angry. Also, to be perfectly candid, I am not a really super big fan of even the mainstream Mormon Church. Not the people--the people are some of the finest on the planet. No doubt about that. But the actual church itself, not such a huge fan. With apologies.

So, what I now do to try to combat this problem for myself is to immediately identify if what I am about to hear or see or read is one of my hot-button issues. If it is, I change the channel or turn the volume down. Or don't read it. I think this approach has helped me.

Everyday the newspaper, tv news is full of bad or horrible news. I listen to a degree but usually close the paper or turn off the tv. I'm not a callous person, quite the opposite. It saddens me the evil in the world. I also have ptsd so violent or certain crimes trigger me. How do I cope? Remind myself this world does have decent people, contribute or support causes, and be empathetic to others.

Stay away from the news. Remember that every story can be exaggerated (and usually with news it is) -- you don't know all the facts. Be aware that though you may think that this world is kind and generous... the truth is.. history is full of horrible things that happened that are a zillion times worse.

I actually keep a little journal and I write down positive things that I see or hear about. Also I like to watch "hope for paws" videos which are people that go out and rescue animals.
