I feel anxiety about not being able to enjoy summer to it's fullest. I live in Sweden and unfortunately many days during the summer are cloudy and rainy. Of course you can't do anything about the weather but it still makes me feel down and disappointed.

I don't work and by that I can't go abroad and I don't have any friends to spend summer with. I'm not interested in staying in tents and that kind of activities.

By that I'm very dependent on the weather. The few days it's sunny and warm I go a nearby lake or to the sea to swim but most days it's too cold or cloudy. Sometimes I take a trip into town for a walk but I still always feel I miss out on enjoying the summer.

What I really want is a cottage close to a lake or to the sea and to live there from say May to September and just go up, go out, having coffee in nature and go for a swim several times a day.

That will never be a reality as I don't work and if I did work, then I couldn't live like that.

Some days it's even harder when the weather report says it will be rather cloudy during the day and I then think of going to town instead. But then the weather becomes too hot for town and too cloudy for the beach. I then just sit inside as the whole situation frustrates me enormously. I don't have a garden so I can't go outside and just "taking walks" is boring and makes me feel even more that I miss out on summer.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I live in another part of the world from you (USA). Sometimes I wish I could be in a place that's cool and rainy rather than hot and sunny all of the time. But I know how you feel about rainy days. I would feel that way myself if it were constantly like that.

Summer is my least favorite season. I don't like the heat that comes with it. But also I don't like having to open my windows and hear all kinds of noises. And I don't seem to like the way my "summer" clothes look. Over the recent decades in my life, bad things have happened in the later part of spring and early summer. So far nothing bad has happened, but it seems like the weather and conditions remind me of the bad times in the past.

July is almost over, which means summer is half way over. There had been days this month that I had events that were not great. So I'm looking forward to this month ending because of it. I hope next month will be better.

I am so sorry that you are in that situation. Not being able to fully enjoy summer can be very depressing.

My situation is that I live in a place where it is always sunny and I find myself longing for cloudy days. It is so hot and terribly bright here that I actually find this situation to be oppressive. to escape the blinding light and heat I generally stay indoors. But looking at the same four walls every day is oppressive too.

The place where I live is a high altitude desert. The air is so clear that sunlight can be really blinding and sun glasses don't seem to help much. So while our situations are in some ways opposite, they are also in some ways the same: not being able to fully enjoy summer.

I often long for the seasons of Fall and Spring because the sunlight is not so brutal and the heat not so oppressive. But like you, I cannot really go someplace else for the summer where conditions would be more favorable to my condition.

Wish I knew how to help you and how to help me too. My heart goes out to you in your distress!

I think people by nature just like to complain. The weather is one of those complaints. I can relate. I used to live in a much colder and wet climate (not far from you Sarah) and I complained that summer is too short. I now live in a climate where summer is hot and mostly sunny. And now I complain that it’s too hot! Lol can’t win

Well there are things I want but won’t ever have and i do work and make decent money. I can’t afford summer cottage because we already pay mortgage. We can’t have another one. And renting cottage is too expensive. Not too many people can afford summer cottage in addition to their regular residence.. I do have a yard albeit small, but it’s so hot that I can’t really be there much.

I do relate to the fact that summers go by too fast. I am off work part of the summer and i get too busy doing stuff or i get too lazy not doing stuff and then I get anxious that summer is almost over.

I guess we just have to live in the present. Easier said than done I know

I’m a little envious of you living in Sweden because it looks a beautiful country.

If you’re finding walks boring is there something you can do to make them more interesting? Like bird watching? Or I don’t know if you have this in Sweden but there’s a thing called Geo caching where by you sign up to the site (you can have a free account) and seek out caches (hidden treasures) in different locations. You can use the gps on your phone to do this. That’s just a couple of things but I’m sure there could be other ways to add interest depending on what you like?

If you like swimming is there a public pool you can access?

Geo caching what a great idea!

A friend of mine does letterboxing. It’s a similar activity of hiding items in boxes and people looking for them. It’s a huge community

Are there free summer concerts in Sweden? We have free summer concerts in all neighborhoods at least once a week so if you go to different neighborhoods you can see free concerts 3 times a week easily.

I understand you.
My situation is similar to that of @will19 and @Yaowen. Here, there are heat wave after heat wave. Very hard to go out unless you do it from 7:00am to 10:00 am. Last night, I took my doggies out at 12:30 at night and the temperature didn’t low a lot. 35,5 Celsius. We have been suffering high temperatures since the month of March. So, you can guess I’m longing for Autumn.
It’s only a matter of time than Spain becomes a desert.
Said that, I see your situation worse and completely understandable. Sun rays are needed and being in a place with rainy and cloudy days for a long time is depressive.
Buy the most comfortable clothes to be protected from the rain (I mean, a light raincoat so you won’t have to carry an umbrella with you). Take in your bag fresh clothes in case you get the surprise for a sudden weather change. Use the toilets in the parkings underground to change the clothes if necessary.
Look at the weather forecast to see which hours the temperature is gonna be more nice.

Don’t let the rain stop you. Look at for alternative activities such us, discovering new places in the city. Search in the net previously what you can be interested to visit.
Program indoors activities, such as, going to the theatre, attending to lectures about topics of your interest, joining to a group to do some kind of activity in a cultural centre. Doing these kind of activities or whatever others that may be of your interest gives you the chance to interact with people.

Tomorrow early in the morning I will hang out with a woman who also have doggies and we are gonna share with our “babies” the few hours we can be outside. Especially, for the sake of the doggies.
Ah, I also try to avoid talking about the heat we are suffering. It makes me feel more comfort and try to focus on other things even when inside me “I’m thinking from time to time how tired I feel because of the high temperatures”. I accept this thought but try to distract myself with something else and it helps me.
Try to avoid thinking that you are not taking advantages of your summer, think only at the present day and the possibilities you can have at every single moment. Stay present.

Let life surprises you.

Keep telling us how are you going.

As a side note, I’m not sure but I think there’s a depression that has to do with seasons. Not sure, I’m talking now by memory.

Thanks. I understand how you feel as a weather that´s too hot isn´t that nice either. Then the heat stops you from doing things you like. I agree with you it´s draining to hear all noises from streets and such when it´s hot and you have to have windows open. We have those hot days too but not as many as you have. I also understand you associate summer with negative things happening, it´s not so easy to just enjoy summer when having those things to thing about.

Thanks. Yes, as the summer season is so short in Sweden I want to make use of the days as much as I can but sometimes that´s impossible due to the weather. I understand you have kind of the opposite problem when it comes to the weather as too much heat also stops you from doing what you want. Do you have any pools or lakes close by to visit during hot days?

Perhaps the weather in spring and fall gives you the opportunity to stay outside more, perhaps go for a swin and such?

As you say, sitting inside looking at four walls is only depressing and it makes me feel life just passes by and that I don´t make use of she short summer period.

Thanks. That´s nice, then you now the climate in Sweden and what I mean by not being able to enjoy summer to the fullest. Where do you live now? If you want to tell.

I understand the weather at yours is too hot instead for many things. We´ve have some days when I could go to the lake or to the ocean for a swim but too many days are cloudy or too cold to stay at beaches. Do you have pools nearby where you can go on hot days?

If one is working I understand you also want to just relax and stay inside even if the sun is shining but I can totally relate to the feeling that you then feel you´ve been "lazy" or that you didn´t do anything of that day.

Thanks! Yes, it´s a beautiful country but unfortunately the weather often stops us from enjoying nature unless you´re a fan of wearing rainclothes or warm clothes. We do have geocaching apps and sites and I thought of trying it out last summer but I then didn´t . It´s a great activity I think when you don´t want to just walk, walk, walk but to have a goal for your visit to the woods.

We have several pools but even if the water in them is rather warm, the air is often too chilly so you can´t sit by the pool afterwards and then it makes it not so tempting.

Thanks. Yes, I´ve heard a lot about the high temperatures and forest fires in southern Europe and I understand it´s hard to live in such a climate. I do have clothes for rainy days and I use them from time to time but it´s not the same and all outdoor restaurants, cafés and so on shuts down if it´s too rainy so it´s not that tempting to stay outside. During autumn you kind of expect that weather here but during summer you want the weather do be sunny and warm.

How nice you´ll meet up with your friend and talk about your dogs. Do you go to a dog park then? Or perhaps the dogs want to swim when it´s hot outside?

Thanks for the links about seasonal depression, I don´t think I have that, it´s more that I keep getting disappointed if I planned to go to the beach for example and then the weather turns out to be too cloudy or cold. But I´m feeling more low and down during winter time when it´s both cold and very dark.

Thank you for your comment. It was a nice day in spite of the high temperatures. We kept staying in the shade and at the park, we ended up all wet because whenever we sat in the grass we got surprise by irrigation sprinkles, lol! It was refreshing.

I do understand you. If I hate winter and cold myself a lot. And then, I understand this feeling of going through vacations and ending up with the feeling that you wasted your time. It’s very sad and depressing.
Still lots of days of vacations or are you approaching to the end?
Maybe the rain will give you, guys, a breath up there.
