I’ve read on here quite a few of you talking about Shadow Work. The first thing I heard of it was on here. I Googled it and I read that it’s working on the parts of your behaviour/personality that might be regarded as shameful, for example: guilt, jealousy, irritation. Do I have the right idea?

How exactly do you do your Shadow Work? I read about journaling, but in what sort of form does this journaling take?

How does Shadow Work make you feel? I read some therapists don’t agree with it because it can make people feel worse I guess?

I read it’s a good idea to do self care immediately following. Do people do this? What are your thoughts?

I haven’t done Shadow Work but often I do go through in my head the things I do that are unhelpful - I don’t always have a solution though so it can feel a bit unfocused and tends to be done when the thoughts pop into my head rather than any structured routine.

Shadow work derives from the work of Carl Jung. I would become familiar with his theoretical and clinical perspective before trying to do shadow work

It’s best to also study some Freud and Alfred Adler too

Once you’ve become familiar with those three psychoanalytic perspectives I recommend the Jung To Live By YouTube channel

Don't do this work by yourself, it can indeed trigger more unmanageable stuff. Get proper support from a mental health professional who can assist you through it.

If you never went scuba diving, you would not go the first time on your own, would you? Same here. You don't know what is lurking deep within. Get assistance before, during, and after your 'dives' into shadow work.

In the past, on and off, I participated in many Archetypes groups and each person discussed the Shadow attributes of the archetype card they drew from the deck and ultimately the discussion would reflect on their personal development and what the archetype meant for them.

I cannot now find exactly the large deck our lead who was not a licensed therapist used, but this is an abridged version of it:
Psychology 101: The 12 Major Archetypes And Their Shadows - Master Mind Content

It was a lot of fun. I miss those groups.

- obesity
