Human activity produced
roughly 40 billion tons of co2 last year
while human activity
from around 1850 to the present date
has produced an average
of approximately 14 billion tons of co2
each year.

14 billion tons per year.
Since 1850.

So...
from 1850 to now
around 2,400 gigatons [2.4 trillion tons] of CO2
has been emitted by human activity alone.

Put into perspective...
that number is the equivalent
of Mount St Helens 1980 eruption
going nonstop...24/7
...for 170 years.

If you're not familiar
with the scope and scale
of the Mount St. Helens eruption, discharge and impact
then a review of that volcano
especially the visuals
ought to help
with seeing the bigger picture.
Keep in mind the bit about nonstop, 24/7 for 170 years.

Too much C02 isn't earth's friend.
So are we complicit?
Well, if you own even half the knack
for understanding scale, scope and ratio
then it's not difficult to conclude...
yeah
we're likely complicit.

Admitting it is a start.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Another interesting note on scale and scope. To equal the human output of C02 for last year alone, it would take nearly FIVE Mount St. Helens [spewing at the rate it did during the first 9 hours of the 1980 eruption] going nonstop...24/7......for 365 days.

@mar dhea I hear you. I know there is a problem and I am contributing to it in some ways.

The problem is finding any common ground that all sides can agree on, like there is a problem, and there is something that we can do to make things better than they would be otherwise by doing nothing. I hope that an attitude emerges that is willing to break out of the habit of just doing the same thing over and over again without regard for the scientific consensus on the consequences of doing nothing.

Rather than despair, I am trying to do the best I can to live a meaningful life that also finds way to help others in some small way. At least I can try to do not harm, as much as possible.

It's hard to watch the battle over the climate question when realizing what our children's children etc stand to lose in the long run.

The recent uptick in that 'us and them' mentality [on a whole slew of pertinent topics] is what bothers me most. Not a very effective game plan unless the goal is to fail.

I agree with your outlook and thanks. Appreciated much and very much valued.

It is not easy but I have been worried about this for a long time and my worry has not helped anything and only made me miserable.

Fear is what often motivates leaders because they want to stay in office and they equate the benefits with happiness. I am not condoning that behavior but I can control my attitude and reactions so I am seeing what I can do to make this world a kinder gentler place. Maybe that is the most significant thing I can do.

I'll have to find a way to do the same. Only practical thing I can do. Keep the situations orbit small and manageable. The stress from all this stuff has been significantly affecting my already full plate. The mechanics of how I define and relate to optimism need to be reviewed.

Easier said than done maybe but the alternative is exponential misery. In my case anyway. I've been seeing it grow like that over the past 8 yrs particularly. Anyway, tightening the orbit, so to speak, is a good place to begin. Cheers C. and thanks.
