highly doubt it to have all the symptoms of this disorder, it affects me severely and my life and is a big problem for me, please do not doubt how severe it is for me and putting it down to hormones, i'm nearly 17, and it is very common for this to happen in those who've been abused and neglected, which i have all my life.
i have not been diagnosed, but the issue has been raised by professionals, i have been told i have attachment disorders/difficulties, but as i'm unde 18, cannot be diagnosed, however i'm raising this concern again in an upcoming meeting. |

you don't have to be 18 to have a personality disorder, i've met others who have been diagnosed under 18 with pd's.
i have all the symptoms of bpd and dpd and they affect me severely. i'd appreciate support now thanks. |

Pup,
I don't think what you're going through can be explained away as a hormonal issue. Hormones and DPP are unrelated. I am in my thirties, and I am also struggling significantly with this dependency problem. Having grown up in an abusive family myself, I have many of the symptoms of Dependent Personality Disorder. When I was younger than 18, I lived a very isolated life with no friends, with a mom that was (still is) overbearing, and domineering, and with an emotionally unavailable dad. You should NOT rely on people on the internet to attempt to diagnose you. Please let your doctor do that. Most doctors are reluctant to diagnose personality disorders in people under 18, but I suppose some do.

I would say there were symptoms of dependency in me by the time I was 16, but rather than just seeing it as a disorder, I see it as a person trying to heal themselves through re-establishing a parental bond that was lacking earlier on. I never really bonded with my adoptive parents and when I was 16 I met a man whom i wanted to be my father because I felt a strong connection with him. The situation was the same at 18 - I don't think that anyone could diagnose it differently because of the two years difference in age. Not diagnosing till the person is 18 is just a policy to make sure the diagnosis is correct. But the way it's diagnosed seems to be very negative. Some people viewed it as an unhealthy dependency; I viewed it as a vital attachment without which I don't think I could have survived. It was my means of survival at that time.

pup, i definately relate, i too have dpd and bpd and have had all the symptoms for years, but until last year when i turned 18 no one would help me with these problems, but now im 19 and everytime i go to the doctors they ask me why im not in therapy or anything for these problems, why do people think that the problems that have existed for ages only become symptoms when your 18 its horrible.
