Longer answer might be, co-dependent means the other person has an issue and you're kinda more concerned about them "getting better" to where you use it as an excuse for your own inability to change or grow; dependent - less focus on the other person's issues? I would just latch on to anybody.

Shortandcute, From the little I know, I have no evidence it really is a term of distinction. Co-dependence seems to refer to the dynamic of a relationship where both partners are bound by the compulsion to provide and the need to receive.
