I am diagnosed with Dependent personality disorder, I lack courage and so I avoid every challenges and responsibilities and think of how I can only do things if I have someone , I feel “ incompetent “ , but I do not have anyone to depend on, so because of that I am bedridden, I do nothing at all, I will not even do the minor tasks or anything because all I want is for someone to do it for me, I lack complete discipline as well, so whenever I try to do something I revert back to that person. I feel like I also try to give excusable explanations for myself and try and justify it so I do not have to do anything , and have someone to do it for me and depend on them. I am in isolation, with no one to depend on, no one who understands it, and dismisses it and says it does not exist. So what can I do ? How can I progress in life ? I have been doing this for years now. I start Therapy tomorrow but I am doubtful it’ll help me, I need something else, or someone to help me. They say my prognosis looks low and I start feeling like I am treatment resistant but I know It may not be true. I have so much potential and I feel so unfuffiled and dissatisfied for not being able to pursue it with all of these obstacles in my way. What can I do ?

We have some similarities. I get what your saying but reality is everyone needs help so personally I wouldn’t call it dependent. No one can do everything on their own. When you go to therapy try to really release every pent up emotion minor or major it’ll make you feel so much better

Hello Pedal: I see this is your first post here on PC. Welcome to Psych Central.

You mentioned you're starting therapy. (Today?) And, at least from my perspective, that's a good place to start with your efforts to progress in life. You didn't mention what type of therapy you're going to have. Perhaps one-to-one talk therapy? That may be a good place to start. However keep in mind there are additional options such as CBT, DBT & others. Plus not every therapist works well with every client. So if the therapist you're seeing doesn't seem to be a good fit, it's important to keep trying to find one who is. Sometimes this can take a bit of effort.

You wrote: "I am doubtful it’ll help me, I need something else, or someone to help me." My personal non-professional opinion would be that therapy really is what is necessary. I don't know what else, or who else, you might find that would be better. I think it's a matter of finding the right therapist for you, as well as the right kind of therapy, and then committing to it & sticking with it. That's the way to heal. There's no "free lunch", as the saying goes. It takes grit & determination to progress in life. And that's true for everyone. In the end you are the only person who can make that happen for yourself.

One additional forum, here on PC, that may be of interest to you would be the Psychotherapy forum. Here's a link:

And then here are links to 3 articles, from Psych Central's archives, on the subject of Dependent Personality Disorder:

Dependent Personality Disorder Symptoms

Dependent Personality Disorder Treatment

Dependent Personality Disorder FAQs

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.
