Hello All --

I was hoping to be able to teach 3 courses this fall, but only two are available. 3 courses would cover my most basic expenses, if I am very, very careful and absolutely nothing in life goes "wrong." I was a little half-hearted about 3, bec. there was going to be a five-hour break and a 12-hr day on campus, plus a 2 hr rt trip commute. So to that extent, not getting the evening course is a relief.

I also could have taught the third course on different days (the schedule in MW, or TTh) but then I would have to commute 4x/week instead of 2x. It cost me $28 to fill the gas tank today, and I have to do that about 2x/week.

I am rather disappointed and, of course, concerned.

I would try to look at it as maybe leaving you open for another opportunity that hasn't shown itself yet. It could happen.

Hi WI -- Yes, I am trying very hard to do that. Teaching is perhaps my least-favorite way to make money. Not as bad as working for the Ding-A-Ling answering service, of course (yes, there really was a ding-a-ling, Shirley!). And considering how little I make per course, the $28/gallon gas price makes it barely worth the trouble. Plus it would have been smack dab in the middle of the day, at noon, and that would have ruled out accepting any potentially better opportunity that comes along.

Presuming, of course, that I can scare up said better opportunity.

Well, heck, at least I'm not working at Ding-A-Ling where the lunch break was 15 minutes, including time to go the the bathroom!

Could you post a notice to do tutoring ? If u are already on campus, perhaps you could pick up a few students to tutor and make alittle extra money. Or perhaps there is another college near enuff that you could teach a course or two somewhere else as well. Many of my professors did that, was always funny to bump into them at the other college when I was picking up an extra course there. Just a thought....

Parker, you are right about looking on other campuses. Because there are other colleges much closer than this one. They should have their courses booked up by now, but adjuncts come and go because the pay is so bad. It's not impossible for something to open at the very last minute, as late as the first week of classes.

Thanks for the reminder.

I don't have the patience for tutoring though. I am fairly conceptually oriented.

I'm sorry that you are disappointed over the work schedule. I've looked and looked and can't find anything to do on T-Th..When your week is split, it sure makes it harder to fit something else in. I think Parker's suggestion about another college is great. With gas prices being what they are, we hardly have anything left after we fill the tank.

I'm going to PM you...xoxox pat

Hi -- I am looking into working harder to build my freelance reputation, doing small pieces about one a month. Most Ph.Ds become consultants, using their knowledge to boss other people around -- er, I mean, to share the benefit of our wisdom with others and get paid for it. Ha, ha.

It's pretty hard to self-market, though, on the way out of a serious depression, especially when my self-esteem has never been that great. The "corporate image" has never been Me.

The hardest thing for me is follow-through. I get so tired, and feel defeated at the least sign of discouragement.

Hi Wants,

I know the feeling!

The truth is that I'm impressed with what you're doing and I think you are a strong lady.

Good thoughts, Myzen
