I remember my great, grand mother tucking me in when I was a little girl. She told me her branch of the family's holocaust story (they were partisans...yes!). How brave they were. Flash forward to high school... I am going through a bout of depression and crying. My great aunt is asking me what is wrong. I remember simply saying "I am depressed". Her response was "you do not know what depression is." I remember as she said this about the history my great, great grandmother told me that night. This was her grand child talking to me. I sat there stunned thinking that compared to their life, I do not have a reason to be depressed. You know if I wasn't self aware I could have carried her damaging message to others in my family. I have decided to pass on the family history but to not to pass on the unhealthy message of dysfuntion from my great aunt. Still thinking about all this...just writing it all down is kind of incredible. Seeing how all the different branches of the family have delt with this. Mind boggling

I'm glad you know that your experience is not invalidated by the experiences of others. I hope that came out right.

A fantastic legacy when handled the right way. Useful to remember that many problems that people had from that hideous chapter of history got buried and denied for generations. I am seeing it now with people I meet from Bosnia.
I applaud your decision to winnow the heroism from the damaging messages and pass only the good along. Truly, you are from a long line of fighters!! Huggggs!

I do not remember the name of the book, but that a book exists dealing with children of survivors of the Holocaust. No matter what happened you do have the right to be depressed. You are correct in finding the strength in your family and not the despair.
