I've been taking nortriptyline since October and had the side effect of a dry mouth which has gotten better. I also had dry eyes but I've used drops for those for starting nortriptyline and Dr. said to keeping using the drops and be sure to drink lots of fluids. And for the last few months, my voice once in awhile gets hoarse and just comes and goes. My dry eyes have not changed and I think it's because of the nortriptyline and my voice has not gotten better but I haven't asked Dr. about my voice yet. How long does it take usually for side effects to go away once I'm used to the medicine? I don't go back to Dr. until April and don't want to call now if I just need to give the nortiptyline more time. Thanks.

Hi ~ Thats just one of the side effects that is on-going. It's NOT going to stop as long as you're taking that medication.

The dry mouth will continue -- you should be using a "dry mouth toothpast" and a dry mouth "mouthwash." You can get both these products at the pharmacy. Also your dentist should carry these things in the office, which it should be cheaper. I've had to use these products for some time now. The dry mouth causes increased cavities in the teeth, so I'd get these two things as soon as possible.

Also, keep using the eye drops, as you can damage the cornea if it becomes too dry.

Unfortunately, alot of medications cause the dry mouth/eyes. Many pain medications cause it too. Best of luck and God bless. Hugs, Lee
