Hi, I saw my T today and he told me I am struggling with acute depression. While I am not constantly depressed, if I have enough issues put on my plate so to speak I do have very down days. And with the ongoing situation I am in, it is making me worse. I have to do something.
I have no idea what medication to try. I don't like the sexual side effects of Zoloft and I guess Prozac is the same. And I have already been warned about effexor. Welbutrin makes me feel combative and Rameron very nauseous. I really don't know what to try and wondered what others here are using and if they find it helpful. |

Thanks danii, I don't know if this question is even permitted here. I know that everyone is different, I just thought I would ask, maybe it is a taboo question.

Unfortunately no medication is right for everyone as you know. They all have different profiles and some of the side effects listed don't even occur to some people. It's all about risk/reward. I'm on medication (and increasing) for the rest of my life because without it I can't function at all So the risk of all the side effects from my cocktail is outweighed by the rewards (ability to function).
The best thing to do is talk with your doctor about the profile of each medicine and you can decide which side effect profile is the one that you feel will have the least impact. Also it's about hoping that that medicine is the one that works too. |

Sadly it is an art not a science... even if they think they know it all.

Ditto what Akekaomen and Omers said.....it's so different for every single individual that it's impossible to predict how someone else's regimen will work for another person. I've been treated for depression/bipolar since 1991 and I've had TWO periods during this time that I felt what I was taking was actually working for me. The first time it was Effexor and I self weaned during a painful divorce only to wind up starting over again 6 months later, but on something different b/c effexor absolutely KILLED my libido. The second time was just recently and it was a BIG cocktail that finally kicked in: Wellbutrin, Cymbalta, Depakote, Adderall, but then a surprise pregnancy popped up and I can't take any of those so I'm relegated to Zoloft only for nine months and I've been absolutely miserable in the deep pits of depression again *sigh* Hopefully, after the baby comes I'll be able to restart my previous regimen and start feeling better again.
I think you just have to resign yourself to try each one as prescribed by your doctor and after a reasonable amount of time if it's not working, or the side effects are too bad for you, try something else. It's the MOST frustrating process I've ever been through, but I finally felt SO much better when I got to a good combination that it was worth years of trying. You also have to be willing/able to change doctors if the one you go to isn't willing to work with you if something's not working. Good Luck! Oh, and if you can make yourself do it, keep up with what you've tried and the side effects, if it worked on depressions, etc, so if you DO ever change docs you can take a quick summary of what you've tried already.....they never take the time to read past medical records, so it'll be up to you to keep up with it and be able to say "been there done that!" __________________ Just for today, I will not sit on my couch and watch TV all day.
