I use CBT Tools for Treating Depression. They have made a big difference in treating my depression symptoms.

first off - are you just trying to avoid medications specifically? are you going to talk therapy? This is a natural form of treatment that can be very helpful to most people over time.

~As willcat suggested, taking a look at CBT can help.
~ I find for myself aerobic exercise of at least 20 minutes per day, 3 times a week is helpful.
~ mindfulness, which is related in some ways to meditation. it also goes hand in hand with CBT
~ eating healthily, avoiding caffeine, working with your body to find a healthier diet can be key
~ some people use herbs for treatment - i'm not sure if these work and I"m not sure if you'd call it "natural". Plus, you can get side effects like you'd get from depressants

My feeling if it's a real depression caused by lack of serotonin in the brain..a real physical illness, then nothing can really ease the depresssion except good meds.

Even with meds we still get down and depressed. I make sure I always leave the house every day. I never isolate. I stay extremely busy. That helps too. I volunteer, run a book group, am on an advisory council for the ctr. draw, go to church etc. This helps me
I also as I said, draw, paint..This takes me away from myself. I am on the computer a lot, I also have two angel cats, both senior gals, ...since I live alone, the cats are fantastic and are two little sweeties ..so for me, pets help!

I also started to see a "t" which I have not had for a couple years. I find I have issues and now need someone to support me re: surgeries I need.

I am also going to attend a mindfulness group that meets weekly. I went once before and loved it but things got in the way. Now I want to make a point of going.

Music helps some, I also can loose myself in t.v. and I read sometimes. Usually my reading is all or nothing. I will read three books in a row then quit for three weeks. Sometimes if you are depressed, reading can be very difficult as you havn't got that focus. For that you can read short articles and magazines. They're fun!

Hope things get better for you

I'm new to this site... Also new to MDD. Why not caffine?. . I have pets too they remind me that I'm needed. It is hereditary for me. I heard that there might be a why to single out the gene and possibly treat depression. I'm looking forward to that. I don't know how to deal with myself but for a year and eight months not knowing what was wrong... Yeah I was shocked but I function still.
