In my mother country, which is not the U.S., I had good relationships with many people. Although I was a little shy, it didn't affect my social life much. After I moved to the U.S. three years ago, however, I began to change mentally. Unlike many foreigners who learn English very quickly, my English level has been remaining almost the same. I naturally became very quiet and didn't pay attention during class. As my sociability decreased, I couldn't make eye contacts with anyone anymore and my whole body, especially my neck muscles, became stiff like rock when I tried to. My every single movement becomes very clumsy from that point until everyone around me is gone. What's worse, when others saw me and knew I was uncomfortable to be with anyone, they couldn't make eye contacts with me either. Their muscles become stiff as well, and they move very awkwardly as if they couldn't control them, almost like they were having a seizure.
I tried to act like normal people everyday but kept failing. My social life is now worse than that of anyone I know. It's also aggravating my depression more and more. This is not all, but I can't explain more deeply because of my poor English. I thought I was suffering from social anxiety disorder, but it seems to be more than that. Does anyone have a clue about what it is? |

First WELCOME to PC!!! Second, I think your english is great!
I think only a doc can tell you exactly going on but I know stress can tighten your muscles up in a big way. Moving to a different place is never easy. Alot of changes and new things in your life. I think stress wise it sounds normal but if it keeps you from doing things you enjoy it is best too see a doc. Again Welcome! HUGS Cher

I admire your English. I can't imagine how hard it would be to learn English as a second language. Talking to a professional is the best first step to figuring this out. Do you have a counseling center at your school?

Welcome!
I also think your English is good. And, if you feel uncomfortable "talking" here, there are downloads you can use to help convert your language to English, I think. It is very difficult moving into a new area - it really doesn't matter too much if it's from another country or another state. Each area has it's own social system and it can be difficult to break into them. A lot depends upon the area. You can "practice" your social skills here to get more comfortable by interacting with us! I think that is the key, in my opinion, is to get to the point where you feel comfortable. It must be extremely difficult to move into a totally new social system and not understand the language real well - I would proboblly react the same. And I only know one language - English - so I applaud you for being as brave as you are! Once again, Welcome! SongBird
