I have been depressed for so long that I don't even know what it is like to be happy. I have been depressed for over 9 years, and when I want to talk to either my husband or my best friend or even family, their answer to it is, "just snap out of it", they just don't know that I can't just snap out of it. meds or talking to a dr don't help. I just wish that I could find someone that understands what I'm going through. If it was just that simple to snap out of it, I would of done it along time ago. I hate feeling like.....depressed. I just feel like noone knows what I'm going through. that's why I'm here.

Ah, the whole "just snap out of it"
It's just because they don't understand. The closest they can probably relate is feeling sad, which sure, maybe it takes a bit of a push then you can just "snap out of it", they won't realise how different that it is. I understand you. I am here and I care.

Sounds like family/friends need to be educated!!!!!!Some family/friends would rather say "snap out of it" then deal with the fact you might have an illness. Their loss you know! If you have done everything to try, and show them that depression is an illness you need to move on and care for yourself. Here, you have found the right place. I hope though you are seeing a therapist to help. Has family been in to see the therapist and has therapist or Doc explained all this to family?

Sorry that they are not so understanding but I guess it might be their way of coping. Some people live in the river in Egypt called denial!!

I to understand you all to well... I did not understand depression either when I did not know anything about it. Then wham 10 years ago it hit me. I have not dug out of my hole since. Even before this I suffered from depression and did not know it.
But it would only last a few weeks. Now it is a fight to go on every day. Can you get them to read a self help book on depression? Can you get them to go to your doctors with you? Print your post out and share it with one of your loved ones. Maybe they will understand. Good luck,, welcome to PC,, You are not alone..

Welcome and thanks for sharing your concerns.

"Snap out of it" is one of the most irritating responses I received when I first sunk into depression. Made me want to SCREAM.

Those who have never experienced depression can never truly understand what it is. I hope you will see your doctor, possibly get an anti-depressant and also get some counseling.

Once you have started to take care of yourself, you will have a chance to bring your family in and find ways to help them understand.

I wish you the best.

It is so insensitive that others do not recognize what we go through as an illness just like when you have diabetes or high BP. What we experience is an illness and it is not something we can just snap out of! Continue to seek help. If your doc is not doing it for you search out another one. My heart goes out to you - I know what you are feeling. Tuti
