I want to be clinically diagnosed by a professional about my depression. It's definitely present and getting worse and worse with each opassing day. I know that depression runs in my family, as does suicide (not thinking of killing myself of course). I try to talk to parents and friends about it but all they do is blow me off and tell me I'm being a dram queen, which doesn't help). How can I find help and/or be diagnosed without my family knowing (because then they'll probably have me locked up or never allow me to go anywhere/do anything)?

You won't be locked up. But you do need to get into treatment. Show this to your parents and tell them you need help.

How old are you? If you're a legal adult the therapist can't tell on you unless you are in immediate danger, and no matter what you think... if you really are in danger of your life then despite the pain and embarrassment it's worth it.

If you are not yet a legal adult it's a bit trickier, but not impossible. Talking to a school counselor may help you, but keep in mind that certain things might be shared with your parents - if I were you I'd outright tell the counselor how your parents react to this type of thing and explain why you don't want to go to them. Most therapists should understand this and react accordingly.

One more thing - depression is a serious problem. You're not being a drama queen, and I"m sorry you're parents and friends are acting like you are. Sometimes it's hard for others to understand what you're going through and that's part of what therapists help you with. they know about mental illness and are able to understand and actually react in a way that can help you. As far as a diagnosis, I don't think that's very important; its just a label. But good care via talk therapy, combined with self help strategies you can find online can be so helpful.

Wishing you luck

What kind of insurance do your parents have? Maybe begin with a regular doc and tell your mom you just need to discuss a few things in private. The reg doc can refer you to a pdoc and a therapist. It will buy you some time to decide how much to share with your parents. And, there are legal ways to see therapists without your parents knowing. Start with the primary doc-

What do you receive out of being clinically diagnosed? Shame, guilt, more depression, harmful drugs, wasted time in therapy, etc?

Be strong and help yourself- no matter where you go to seek help, YOU are going to be the main factor in your own recovery. Nothing will improve without your hard work and determination.
