Have you ever actually tried to put an image to your condition? I.e. a cluttered room, the colour of black, a cloud, etc?

When you think of your depression, what image comes to mind?

For me, I've found I've felt very cluttered and "messy" when I think of my depression, because there's so many aspects to it and so much going on. And because of this, I sometimes picture it to be this big mess thing, or violent, black, wayward scribbles, if that makes any sense!

And when I think of my depression, I think of things that occurred in my dreams, basically because I hate waking up in the morning (cliche, I know). I mean, my dreams aren't of the "glamorous hunk and I on a bed of roses" variety, they're just ordinary most of the time, but I'd rather be in that dream world than here, you know? I always feel disappointed when I wake up.

Black, definitely very black...

I've been fortunate, though...since they started treating me for what I have (bipolar) instead of what I don't(depression), I feel much better....YAAAAAY!

That's good!! What does your depression look like?

I'm in the middle of GP visits at the moment (I've not been referred to counselling yet, though I may ask, as I can feel the depression's getting worse).

I'm in a cave. Dark, and too many tunnels. I don't know which one - if any of them - leads out.

It feels like walking through quicksand. You don't make any forward progress, and sink lower at the same time if you try to fight it. If you stop panicking and ask for help, you'll get pulled out of the hole.

I have always pictured mine as a black ball that sits in the pit of my stomach, down near the left corner (yes, I get very specific when describing this, LOL, but I've had it since I was a teen, and now I'm certifiably middle-aged, so I've had a long time to think about it!).

When I start to get depressed, I picture the black ball as having exploded, and it slowly starts to make its way up to my throat, trying to choke me. My therapist knows exactly what I mean when I tell him I'm "choking on black goo."

If any of you are Star Trek: Next Generation fans, remember the last episode of the first season, where Yar got eaten by the black goo? Mine isn't sentient :-), but that's how I picture it.

A very dark cave filled with quicksand, sometimes a swamp. The cave is filled with spiders webs and sometimes snakes.

My depression looks like a few things, dusty, neglected rooms, little bundles of started but never finished projects, life is in slo-mo,emotions leave my face, just total blank stare, the lady I see in the mirror(me)starts to get uglier, fatter, and balder. My depression, can grow to be more and more debilatating(sp?) even fatal, sooooooooo gang, I keep in touch with my pdoc asap if the depression is going more than 2 weeks, plus keep my pdoc appts. med managment. Best advice I can offer, don't ignore your depression, if it is lasting 2 weeks or more, contact someone for help, the sooner you nix it, the better off you'll be.
Please take care y'all,
Roe

I have to say that the first thing that popped in my mind when I saw this thread was mine is a big green monster with puss bombs that when he wants to assault me lets one of the puss bombs go off in my face and it attacks every part of me.

I have an art therapy book - would anyone mind if I drew or collaged these images or views of depression? It wouldn't be distributed (it's only for personal usage) and I won't use usernames or whatever. I just think it would be an interesting collection of what depression means for other people.

It looks like a black cloud, that can start to twist inside like a tornado.

My depression is a small run down farm house- white with black shutters. The door has to be banged down to get in and in each room there are pictures of the kids I used to care for. There are a lot of clothes but none of them good. The pictures on the wall have sayings on them like, "cling to jesus.." whenever i enter into this house in my dreams i cry.

A body (mine) ...covered in mud, but it's slick with orange tones to it.

It's thick and goopy and it looks as if I'm being stretched like taffy or being pulled apart and I'm trying to get free.

It's covering my face and my mouth looks like a whole ...I can't barely breath. I am suffocating.

lost, if you would like to include mine in a collage or something, I am happy for you to do so. I've tried to draw it myself before, but I can never make it come out right.

mine looks like a deep, dark hole, cold and damp, dirt on the floor that smells musty and takes my breath away. Depression has dark scary faces and eerie sounds that pierce my ears. Depression makes me sad because I can't make it go away.

Lost, you are very welcome to use mine. I don't have enough drawing ability to sketch it myself.
