yes they can. I worked on a few different hot lines. Hot lines have three different programs for locating people -

an automatic reporting system for reporting to the phone company and the police crank calls for investigation

Caller Identification

and a tracking device - the same that police, fire, and so on use for finding those that call in an emergency but then pass out or are otherwise unable to tell their whereabouts due to age or injury and so on.

How this all works is the phone call comes it. the worker looks at the caller ID and writes down the phone number.

then At the moment that the worker picks up the phone recording devices start recording (ever see Rescue 911 or other shows that play a recording of 911 calls) well same thing.

The tape starts recording, the computer starts tracing the call through the phone lines and cellular radio waves type towers.

Within 1-3 minutes the location of where the call is being made from is up on the computer screen.

then the worker has a variety of switch board buttons - police, ambulance, phone company, electric company and so on, so that they can forward those agencies the location. that way while they have the person on the phone these other agencys like police and ambulance are being dispatched from the callers nearest police and fire stations.

When you hear in the news and read in the newpapers about this person and that person being arrested for falsifying reports this is how they caught them because making false reports of suicide and so on is illegal.

Who can you talk to and remain anonymous anymore?

I want to talk to someone when I feel like I am going to explode........but I can't because I can't be honest......ugh!

And they wonder why some people can't/don't ask for help!

by going into therapy what you say during the therapy sessions and any other conversations with that therapist is considered confidential files. The only time a therapist must disclose they are seeing you is if you are a threat to yourself or someone else to the point where hospitalization is needed.

A therapist must report threats of suicide
threats of harm that they feel is out of control
threats to harm another person (this includes if a client discloses they know of child abuse situations that are at the moment going on in the clients life or someone the client knows, or if the client discloses that they themself is abusing a child physically, mentally or sexually.)

If you go to a therapist and say I feel like killing myself that therapist will take time to find out how close the "I feel like" is changing to "I am going to"

If they feel the client is going to make an attempt they have to report it to their supervisor who will advise them of the agency protocal and that may include reporting to police for emergency inpatient protocal.

But just talking because you feel like you are going to explode and need a place to vent a therapist wont reviel who you are, why they are seeing you or even if they are seeing you.

I guess what I don't want to do is worry someone who knows me. I want to say things, to just talk to someone who doesn't know me personally, to have someone tell me why I don't want to do "whatever" without the added burden of what I might do in the end.

I am sorry if that does not make sense......it is odd though, I had been thinking of asking the same question.........

i totally understand you. It sucks that the one thing that is so imporant (life or death decisions) is so difficult to talk to others about.
