Recently i began feeling depressed probably because I'm lonely because i don't have any friends. I've never had any friends other than people i would talk with during lunch/or in class in high school, it never began to bother me until recently. I'm timid and find it hard to talk to people since it takes time for me to open up. I find it intimidating to talk to people i don't know. The only "friend" i have is a girl from one of my classes, and that's only because sometimes after class i go for lunch or to the mall with her and her friends. I find it awkward since i don't know anyone other than her since i get even more shy in groups, let alone groups of strangers. I've never been able to build a lasting friendship with anyone or had a girlfriend. I've never even had a best friend. I find it hard to make friends but i try, but it never grows to any sort of meaningful friendship. I'm not sure what I'm asking for, maybe some advice on how to make friends or how i can feel better for now. Thank you for reading and any help.

It is so nice you go to lunch with this "friend" and even better that she asks you to join her with other people on trips to the mall. You should go and try to talk with the girls. Give yourself credit for adding little things to the conversation. This is how one develops good friends. You share things you like and don't like. Discuss teachers, classes, music, etc. It is O.K. if you are not the "star" of the group. It is nice to be included. Closeness evolves over time. One day you will meet someone that you really connect with and it's possible that you've already met her. Hang in there. You sound like you will be a great friend to some lucky person someday.

I can't hang out with you, but if you'd like to write sometime I like pen-pals.
