I used to take SJW for awhile last year. I am not sure why I stopped, maybe a financial thing, but I have been in such a hole that I am so desperate to try anything again. I can't remember if it helped or my mind was just tricked into thinking it was helping. Has anyone had really great results from taking it? Any bad experiences?

Nope. Never used it, Fickle pickel, but I do use the vitamin B series for depressed feelings (and also some other vitamins). They're all very good at relieving the low feeling tone.

My daughter had a friend in college who tried St. John's Wart, but it was not really helpful for her. I've never known anyone other than that girl who tried it.

I'm not a great believer in over-the-counter medications. There are some really good ones now available through a psychiatrist, and if I were you I might consider talking to a specialist and finding out if one might be helpful. You could save yourself a lot of experimenting and get right to the heart of your depression and
find relief within days.

Take care.

I really tried with St. John's Wort for my depression, and even though I was taking a really high dose, I didn't find that it helped at all.

I haven't taken St. Johns Wort personally but I know a few people who have tried it and it didn't help them. On the other hand I have a friend that takes SAM-E and it seems to help his depression greatly. He is really sensitive to meds so he tried SAM-E and he is a believer in it. Try it, it might work for you!

Thanks for the info. I have some SJW here and think I will take it until I can solve my issue of finding affordable treatment in my area. It feels overwhelming at times, but hopefully I will make some real progress soon. Thanks again

I took St John's Wort when I was first diagnosed. It didn't help me, but I've heard that a lot of people do benefit from it. I hope you find a treatment that works really well for you!

St. John's Wort does not work for me. SAM-e had worse side effects on me than my current medication does (prozac). I find valerian helps me a lot.

I heard it's good for occasional mild depression, but not for serious clinical depression.

The act of taking a medication to make you feel better may do so in itself. When they do trials on antidepressent about 30% of the people improve on the placebo. Taking something in itself could make someone feel better. Natural remedies, along with proper diet, exercise help a lot of people.

Hey, thanks Chandler. I forgot all about SAM-E; good to know that it does have some positive effects. Maybe I will try it next. I'm a little reluctant about taking pharmaceuticals, so this may be a good idea. But who knows, it's a crap shoot.

Tried it when I had already slipped way too low, got nothing from it, friends haven't either... agree it may only work for very mild blues

I tried it. Don't know if I was on the proper dose or if it was a good brand or what not. Took it for maybe two months. Didn't do anything except give me some gastrointestinal upset.

If you do take it, make sure it's a good brand that's been standardized for hypericin and hyperforin content. Kelly's SJW (St. John's Wort) pages for depression is a good website to consult.

Also, it is natural, but it works by tweaking neurotransmitter uptake. It can also make you photosensitive. And never take it with antidepressants or certain other drugs. Natural doesn't mean no side-effects or adverse reactions.

I'm a huge fan of Sam-e. I'm not sure how much it helps my mood, but I do find that I'm a lot more alert and less likely to stay in bed all day. At 400mg I don't notice any side effects.
