Depending on the availability of medical care, you could go to a regular doctor who might prescribe medication or, better, refer you to a psychiatrist and perhaps a therapist. The psychiatrist would most likely focus on treating depression with medications whereas a therapist would employ some sort of talk therapy. Many - not all - people report better results when talk therapy is at least part of the treatment.

If the depression is not too severe, you may be able to experience significant relief through various self-help methods.

Tarik Farooq, I would start by talking to a regular doctor. He or she can refer you to a psychiatrist.

Once at the psychiatrist, have an honest discussion about your symptoms. Don't be too surprised if you are prescribed medication.

Once you get the medication, ask the pharmasist any questions such as, "Does it need to be taken with food? Are there any strange side effects?" Take the medication as directed.

You may also want to try journaling, and seeing a therapist.

One last tip, Google "Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance" and your city. Go to the meetings if you can.

A Therapist will discuss your issues and suggest to your md if she thinks its time for meds, or you can see a psychiatrist. I think after 2-3 years of feeling that way, It's time to talk to someone, its not getting better on its own. Good Luck and keep posting.

Hi Tarik Farooq,

I've noticed a few of the replies have reccomended seeing doctors. I wanted to give you some advice if you don't have health insurance or if you can't afford this.

It helps to get another perspective on your thoughts and beliefs. Have you tried to talk to a friend or a family member about how you're feeling? A lot of the times if you sit down with someone and talk for a while, they will help you see things in a more positive light and encourage you.

My parents helped me a lot when I was younger, they said a lot of things that encouraged me throughout the years.

I hope this helped, and hang in there,

Lisa
