i have been unhappy in college. i do not want to socialize with anyone, or form friendships. i am not interested in people. however, when i am alone in my room, i am still unhappy. i feel lethargic and unmotivated to do anything productive. i am unmotivated to form friendships and do school work. when i am home i am happy to see my friends and family. maybe its because i already know them. even though i am unhappy, i still dress well, wear make up, laugh and smile.

julie,
is this your first time away from home? Many college students have a difficult time adjusting to the college life. Depression from leaving home and clinical depression can feel very similar.

Some questions to ask yourself to try and help you figure out which,
1) do you feel a weight come off your shoulders when you are at home
2) does your depression lift shortly before the day you go home to visit?
3) when you are at home, do you feel depression begin or worsen when the time to go back to college gets nearer

If all those answers are yes, you may be having trouble making the transtion. If your depression stays the same regardless of where you are, its less likely to be from trying to adjust to college.

Either way, it might be a good idea for you to speak to a counsellor at the college you are attending. Most colleges have personel that are trained to deal with problems such as yours. If they feel that you need more than they can give you, they may suggest you see a psychologist or psychiatrist.

There is no need to feel weak or ashamed, so please don't. You are at a pivital point in your life and many people have trouble adjusting. Some people find that although they want to go to college, it doesn't fit into their lives at that particular time. Others change majors multiple times before what they are doing feels right.

Your best bet is to talk to someone so that you have some sort of support system at school. Finding the cause and answer to your depression is the beginning of healing.
