I introduced myself in the intro forum but I thought I'd go a little more in depth here.

I was diagnosed with depression about 10 years ago, although I'm pretty sure I was depressed even as a child. I've tried all the SSRIs, but I'm allergic to them, so I'm currently on Cymbalta, which, until recently, was working just fine.

The last couple of weeks have been hellish. I cry all the time, I have a hard time going to sleep and then I nap a lot during the day. If I didn't have children who needed to be ferried about, I'd probably stay in bed most of the time. I've lost interest in most of the things I like to do, like cooking and reading and writing. I can't concentrate long enough to do any of them anymore. I spend a lot of time playing Candy Crush and trying to find something, anything, on Netflix or YouTube, that will make me at least smile. And sometimes I do find something, but as soon as I'm done watching it, I'm back in the hole again.

I really can't stand much more of this. I am going to call my doctor about it tomorrow and I've discussed it with my therapist, but in the meantime, things are just awful.

I'm so sorry you are feeling this way. I take a medication which is not an SSRI and makes me sleep without grogginess. T he name is Agomelatine 25mg . I've been insomniac for decades. I'm amazed this stuff works so well. It's been the final lynch pin in my meds. I am pretty comfortable now. I wish everyone could get this relief.
At least you are facing your problems by going to a dr. And distracting yourself even for a short time is very smart. Have you ever played hidden object games. When I go wonky they can distract me pretty ell.
I hope you get good news from your dr's appt.

It doesn't look like that medication is available in the US.

Hi Amelia, I'm really tired and just checking the posts but am not feeling up to writing a full deserved reply. Wanted to let you know I've read your post and experience a lot of your symptoms. I feel really sleepy which is something to take advantage of now since my depression has me sleeping poorly, and I do lie around in bed most of the day too, but rarely sleep. Take care of yourself and hold hope for hearing from that dr. - keep us posted and pm me anytime. I'm glad you've written.

(((Amelia))) ... I hope things start to look up for you. I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. Sometimes I wish I could just take everyone's pain away.

I'm feeling a bit better today. Thank you for all the kind words. It does help, even if I don't always know how to respond.

Hi Amelia,
so glad to hear a bit better yesterday. Hey, we'll take it! I too try to distract myself - actually spend most of my time trying to read of watch something online or play PC word arcade games. As soon as it ends I'm in the hole again, and it's hard sometimes to even decide to read a book.

Did you get in touch with the dr. or therapist? Was it helpful?

xxx

I didn't but I will on Monday. I'm wondering if there's something you can take that's a short term thing, the way people take xanax or ativan for anxiety. Is there anything like that for depression? Or are they all things that need to build up in the system.
Thanks for this!

Most take a while to build up in the system, but some, like Abilify, take effect almost immediately. Some of us take them long-term for stability. (i.e. to make up for what nature doesn't provide us genetically, in "feel-good" chemicals). Others can take them when they are in a depressive situation, then they go back to "normal" and can wean off them.

I'll ask my doctor about it on Monday. Abilify freaks me out a bit because the ads list really scary side effects.

Most psych meds have really scary side effects. They have to put them in ads--they are in the fine print if you take them without seeing an ad. I haven't had any adverse effects from it so far. On top of that I take 120 mg of Cymbalta and 30 mg of Remeron.

Hi, Amelia. I feel for you. I take Prozac as one of my meds. It took several weeks for it to kick in. After about two weeks i felt somewhat better but it took much longer for me to get a better hold on the depression. I still get those down times so it's a constant challenge to keep me distracted. I work and that helps but it comes with its own stresses. Once I get home i don't want to do a thing. I force myself to do some chores even though i'm angry the whole time. At least it makes time pass. Then finally I get to sleep. That's the best time.
