I get depression in the winter and I'm hoping this year I can avoid that. I have bipolar 1 and I was told I could do light therapy and take a small dose of antidepressants. I have an appointment with my pdoc in late October so I can talk about this issue.
When do you start light therapy and meds? Should I see my pdoc sooner?

For a while my healthcare providers treated me for SAD. In addition to depression I had (have?) a suspected circadian rhythm disorder. They provided me with a "light box," which I used every morning for a couple of months in the autumn - it did nothing noticeable for me. If I truly had SAD, it should have had at least some effect.
Light treatment for SAD is nice in that it doesn't involve any drugs. Adding an antidepressant may increase the effects, but that's something you need to carefully work out with your doctors. Late October? It depends on your history, but it would be nice to see your doctors earlier in case there's a lag in getting set up for the light therapy.
