Has anyone here ever taken the supplement 5-HTP for depression? I've read that it's supposed to help, but when I've taken it my results have been kind of mixed. Back in late April I started taking it for the first time. I think I took it for about a month or two, and I noticed a slight improvement in mood at first which seemed to kind of taper off after awhile. It also really suppressed my appetite. I know that's one of the things it's meant to do, but I felt like it was almost TOO much, like I had to remind myself to eat because I just was never hungry.

Started taking it again a week or so ago and again am noticing a slight mood improvement, though nothing overly drastic. I've noticed a slight reduction in appetite as well, though not as much as before.

Anyone else have any experiences with this supplement?

hi bluedolphin, I have tried it and didn't notice any effect at all. I've read that it works for some people, but if I remember it's recommended that if you use it to take regular breaks from it. I can't remember why I think it's not meant to be taken long term.

I took it and felt better. Then my P doc said it does the same thing as effexor which I already take. If I get a bad spell I'm going to try it (5-HTP) again.
