Things were fine until a remark was made about me going to groups and AA meetings. The remark was "What do you think those adults feel like when a teenager comes walking in saying shes got problems, when they are all battling alcohol and drugs addictions." Im sorry that I have problems, im sorry im not perfect. I say just go f yourself and you don't have any idea what its like to be me, can you really be so heartless as to say such a thing to someone. My self esteem just plummeted and I lost myself in those words.

Some people get this odd impression that young people do not have 1. life experience and 2. problems. Neither are true... both factors are present in people at all different times in their lives... some faster than others. So yeah, just nod and smile and let it wash off your back like water off a duck __________________ Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA): UK |

I'm sorry GenCat....I don't know what happened, and I am not making excuses for anyone else's behavior. But if you are in an environment where people have problems, then don't forget that those problems are their own and they might be the reason that you were spoken to the way you were.
I know it's hard not to feel hurt, and I have had such a reaction as yours. I have to remind myself not to take it personally. Sometimes, I wonder if this is such a good place for me, too..... Hugs to you. You're a good, caring person and you need to see that as the bigger picture. Hard, I know. But just look at your past responses to people here and learn from what you read....it's good stuff. |

I should have said this came from my mother, not someone on here...that's why I make this a big deal.

Just let it go in one ear and out the other. When you're all calm sit and have a face to face with her. Calmly tell her that she hurt you and that you are requesting that she take a little more care with what she says. Don't give her the opportunity to engage you in any way. Say it, say thank you, kiss on the cheek, and get up and leave. (I have four kids and that's what would sink in for me) |

Such a remark from your mother. Oh dear, not the kindest of souls is she? Sorta thing my mother would say.
I remember years ago (when I was a young teen) saying to a older colleague who I was friendly with that I was depressed. 'You, depressed? at your age? huh, what have YOU got to be depressed about! So much for a kind listening ear. Not. Telling my mother I was hurt would do no good at all in fact it would make things worse, that would have really made her smirk. I think thats trying to shame you for having feelings, like making you feel ashamed of your feelings. Really - excuse you! That totally sucks. my parents were like, the only thing they considered valid for me to be depressed about would have been losing my virginity, for which they would literally have killed me (or at least disowned me). Otherwise it was, dont bother them, not important enough.

That is a ridicules statement. My nephew got sober in AA when he was 16 and he was welcomed with open arms. There are alot of young people in AA. There are young peoples meetings. There is a young persons conference each year. I used to take my 17 years old daughter and her friends to meetings just so they know what it is like and to know they have that option. A couple of her friends were already in AA at 17.
