Is it normal to not be able to think clearly at all. My mind is a slow, foggy mess and I know that I must be coming across as a complete idiot. And nothing feels real, the world is just a dreamy fog.

I go through that sometimes, BUT I don't consider myself "normal". I have bipolar/depression/ anxiety. So, I don't know how to answer your question, other than to say you're in good company.

Its a normal part of depression. Somebody can correct me if I am wrong but I believe the hippocampus actually shrinks. A depressed person just all round does not perform well.

I thought it was probably a normal part of the depression, but wanted to make sure that it wasn't something else. Didn't know that about the hippocampus shrinking though. Is freezing mid air or mid-movement sometimes, like for a minute, part of it as well? Freezing and staring.

Not sure what you mean by freezing? But psychomotor retardation is part of depression particularly when it gets severe. I get this pretty badly and people tell me that I am slow to respond. For example if somebody asks me a question I might kind of stare into space for a bit before answering.

Yeah, it's probably part of that. It's like I get stuck on a thought and don't move again until my mind is able to move on, or I realize what's happening and pull myself out of it.
And I totally get the slow to respond thing. |

Yeah its like the input and output is slowed dramatically but the thinking part isn't. Kind of over analyzing and you can't quite process the thought. Dopamine seems to be the neurotransmitter re this aspect of major depression.
