I think that the underlying cause of depression in general is just unconsciously withdrawing from your own internal decision making process. That's why depression makes you helpless and passive. That's why, I think, SNAP CLUB works so well, at least in my case.

A mixed bag, a bit of genetics - there's a clear family history, a neurotic personality, an unstable early childhood, abusive relationships and finally a bit of trauma.

Biology/genetics.
After decades of living with this from a young age I am confident I can't just decide not to be depressed.

Seems to be genetics for me as well, as there are no apparent" reasons for my depression

Nature and Nurture. (Those that nurtured me didn't mean to make me crazy. They had/have their own issues.)

Definitely genetics since it runs in my family, loneliness and a fear of rejection and abandonment.

One symptom of Depression is indecisiveness, difficulty concentrating and making decisions. Depression is very much different from one person to another. There isn't just one underlying cause.
