This is what I was diagnosed as and I'm confused. How does it differ from moderate or severe depression?

It is a bit worse than "moderate" and not as bad as "severe" or "major" depression.

Mild, moderately mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe. It's a continuum and yours is a bit worse than just moderate or moving toward even more severe if not "caught" and worked with now. Mild, Moderate or Severe Depression? How to Tell the Difference. - Symptoms - Depression

It's all incredibly subjective - how can another person tell you how you feel inside?! I've had one pdoc tell me I was severely depressed and force me to have ECT against my will and the next, a few days later (ETA: with the exact same symptoms), tell me that I'm not depressed at all! IMO, what matters more is what do YOU think?

I agree with you completely.

And one psychiatrist can give a completely different diagnostic from another psychiastrist, even if you visit them at the same day.

Moderate to severe depression is really a way fo professionals to rate your mood, so they can see progress or change. Your pain, however, is as bad as it feels to you. If you are the worst you have ever been or can imagine, then you are suffering and need taking seriously, which I hope they are doing for you. I really feel for you I have lived with 'mild' 'moderate' and 'severe' depression, and all require strength and determination to get through, whether you're able to work, drive or struggle to string a sentence together is pretty irrelevant when you're trying to survive. You are a valuable person and I'm so sorry life is so hard for you at the moment. Remember how you feel when you are less depressed and hold on to it as you can get there again. Life can be better so hang on in there. If you've been better before you can be better again. I hope you understand Me as I'm rambling , hugs,

Hi there

it probably means you have all the reported symptoms of severe depression ( they have a list in questionnaire form) but you are having only little of each.

I think it's just ridiculous, now we are splitting hairs! pdocs should just stick with mild-moderate-severe. It leads to more confusion then aide, and is highly subjective to doctors and making it even more complex then it needs to be.
