My brother attempted suicide this last Monday and he used the Oxy prescribed by his doctor to do it. He is worried that the doctor will cut him off from the meds because he broke his pain med contract. I hope this isn't true. He really doesn't need to be withdrawing right now because he is in a very bad way as it is. Any thoughts or experience with this would be appreciated. I realize that his doctor might have a different take on things, but he is freaking out about this and I don't know what to tell him.

I think every doctor probably does things differently so the only way you can know for sure is by asking his doctor.

I have OD'd several times over the last few years, sometimes on pain meds but not always. My meds have never been stopped altogether but I now only get given a week supply at a time to reduce the risk of OD. That's just my experience though.

Thank you for responding, secretwhisper. I'm so sorry that you've had these experiences. I'm bipolar and I've never made an attempt, but I'm very familiar with the desire to.

I'm so worried about my brother because I think if he has to go through withdrawals right now it will send him over the edge.

Hopefully his doctor will understand that going through withdrawals would just make things worse. I would suggest mentioning your concerns about withdrawals to his doctor, and if he/she is reluctant to continue the pain killers then you could suggest just getting weekly scripts. Perhaps if the doctor is very uneasy about this you could go to the appointment with your brother and offer to keep the meds for him and only give him what he needs each day.

Hi Otter

I am sorry this happened to your brother. But thank God he is still with us. I hope and pray the doctor does not stop his pain medication. The only thing I know about it is that here in the UK. if they think someone is a suicide risk they will give them a very limited supply of meds just enough to do a week. I suppose this could be restricted further to be a supply for just two or three days. The doctor might agree to this. I just hope and pray your brother does get the help he needs from medication and therapy to make a good recovery. Take care. God bless and best wishes from your friend Francis
