Sorry you have suffered from addiction. So glad you have the will to stop. That is awesome. Many people post on the addiction forum and tell of how they need support to keep them clean. AA, NA and other 12 step programs can really help when the going gets rough. Here are some resources. Addiction and Substance Abuse | Psych Central

A therapist that specializes in your area of challenge can be a help also. Possibly a psychiatrist to confirm diagnosis and prescribe meds.

Many people who are actively involved in Psych Central find it helps take them out of their own problems to develop empathy for others. And their problems though still there are more manageable. There are lots of compassionate people here that can make the load lighter by sharing and caring. Feel free to participate actively at Psych Central. http://forums.psychcentral.com

Please feel free to private message me or any of the Community Liaisons by left clicking on the name in blue to the left of their post) for questions or just to share.

Hi passionfruit3, I haven't had a chemical addiction, but I struggle with addiction to hurting myself and the hormones/chemicals my body produces which are similar in many to strong painkillers or some illegal drugs (which try to mimic these hormones in the body).
I find it even harder when I feel like I'm tackling it on my own.
Congratulations on admitting to yourself that you have this addiction. I urge you to get some '3D' support, such as organisations suggested by CANDC. If you really want to quit, that will give you a better chance and they will teach you tools to cope without the pills.
GOOD LUCK

I don't know what's in your area, but in my area in the uk there is a good charitable organisation that helps people who want to reduce or stop self harm. It may be worth investigating.
Basically I think it's the same as addiction to alcohol or drugs, the only way to stop is to stop!
It's a whole lot less difficult if you have some helpful support. But still difficult and the way is often paved with relapses and then getting back on the wagon again.
I'm on the trying to try to get back on the wagon at the moment. (can't find a smilie for determined) The only way to get there is to get up when you fall down, which sometimes takes more strength than others.

Good luck as you decide which way you want to go. They are hard choices. But possible.
