About three weeks ago, I was in a car accident and suffered a concussion. Most of the physical symptoms have gotten better, but I have been left feeling emotionally awful. I have depression (which was relatively managed by medication prior to hitting head)--also OCD, which has made driving a nightmare.

But since the concussion, I've become extremely depressed again. Is this something to be expected from a head injury if you have pre-existing depression?

Hello OnionKnight, I am sorry that you were involved in a car accident. It is traumatic, my family was in a car accident 3 years ago, and it still affects them. I am not a doctor, and I cannot answer your question in regards to concussion. It could be the car accident that has brought all this to the fore. I hope you start to feel better real soon.

Hello OnionKnight: I don't recall reading, or hearing, anywhere about a specific relationship between concussion & depression in individuals who already struggled with depression. Perhaps there has been some research done with regard to the possibility of such a link. However, my perspective would be, as the saying goes: the proof of the pudding is in the eating. The fact is, from what you wrote, that since the accident you've become extremely depressed. So my thought would be that consultations with both a medical doctor (perhaps a neurologist) & your pdoc or therapist, if you have one or both, would be in order. From my layman's perspective, it seems to me that the important thing here is to address the increased depression you are experiencing, regardless of whether it has been caused by the concussion or is simply a reaction to having been involved in the accident to begin with. The sooner you address this resurgence of depression, the better. As I'm sure you're aware, situational depression left untreated can & does have a way of morphing into clinical depression. My best wishes to you.

Hello. I have been doing a project in school about brain waves, and I needed to learn about the EEG machine, which shows what your brain waves look like. Anyways, while doing this project, there was a new study done that there is a physical problem with something in the brain after a head injury that causes depression. I decided to look up "head injury and depression" on Google and a whole bunch of links came up. I chose the first one from my area and the link is below:
http://www.msktc.org/tbi/factsheets/...c-Brain-Injury
It seems like a good site. I am not entirely sure though. I skimmed it. Anyways, I know that it is pretty common for people to develop depression after a brain injury.
And I'm sorry about the car accident. That must have been terrifying. I hope you feel better .

ive had concussions and worser brain injuries from severe head banging my entire life [im now prescribed padded helmets through the NHS],basicaly concussion can worsen how you feel if you had hit it in the emotion part of the brain at the front.

diet can also alter how you feel,if you have been eating comfort foods and nothing else since the crash it coud also make you feel worse.
