I've been suffering from depression for a while now...
But I've never had a good way of coping or trying to take my mind off of the emotional pain... any suggestions? how do you cope?

Sleep. Lots & lots of sleep.

Nothing else is even remotely as effective in my case. Not a damn thing.

Getting ready to snooze now, actually. My eyelids are getting heavier & heavier as I type.

My pets help me a lot to get out of depression

medication, sleep if you can manage to stay asleep. I watch boring science lectures by Robert sapolasky on you tube. he actually has a good one on the biology of depression.

As much as I hate it, exercise helps me (when I am able to force myself to go). Once I get to the gym and start working out I feel better. I think aside from the endorphins I also feel a sense of accomplishment when I exercise which can also lift my mood. Socializing can also help - I tend to feed off other people's mood so if I'm with happy upbeat people that tends to rub off on me a bit. Obviously it is not always appropriate to exercise of socialise like late at night and that's when I struggle a lot. Sometimes breathing/relaxation techniques help then.
