Hi,

Awhile back my pdoc prescribed Ativan along with my other meds for anxiety. I hated it...it made me foggy and I had memory issues. Also, I noticed on it I became severely depressed. I developed tolerance and had to keep increasing my dose... I just went off of it and the withdrawals are terrible. Antihistamines tend to trigger depression as well.

My doc has now put me on Vistaril and Gabapentin instead. Has anyone here taken Benzos or Vistaril and it made their depression worse? It seems with Bi-olar and BPD the balance between falling into mania or depression can get out of wack with certain meds...for me antidepressants are horrible
Esp cause I have BPD as well.
I also take Seroquel and Lamictal...

Hello,

Sometimes antidepressants can seem to cause depression because they give you a little more energy and now that you have energy you didn't have before, you are able to think about how hard life is, whereas before all you could really do was sleep and avoid everything.
Benzos act very quickly, and the response that they give calms you down immediately, which is why they can be so addictive. For me they make me tired, (but that's not saying much coming from a narcoleptic) and sometimes the side effect of sleepiness can be confused with depression side effects because depression causes excessive sleepiness. But other than that I don't really see any possible connection.
BUT. Everyone's body is different.

Good luck finding what works best for you!

Vistaril is an allergy med, but it is also used for anxiety (and does not have the addiction/dependency issues associated with benzos) and even for nausea. It's one of those meds that has a variety of uses, even though it is primarily classified as an antihistamine.

My son took vistaril for anxiety and it worked well. He didn't find it caused him any side effects. I've been given vistaril for nausea and it knocked me out for hours.

But you said that antihistamines trigger depression for you, so putting you on an antihistamine for anxiety seems like a decision that wasn't thought through. You might talk to your doctor about this.

Benadryl was what I took before and it was def a downer for me. Also mainly the Benzos like Ativan and Klonopin
Now that I've quit them I don't feel depressed. I don't tolerate antidepressants because they make me agitated
